Hello~! I have had a jaw malocclusion since I was young, but because there was no pain I just got by. But starting a few years ago it gradually got worse, the sound from my jaw got louder, pain appeared, and my mouth would not open as much as before (it does open, but it hurts if I try to open more than that). I felt that leaving it like this would only make things worse, so I finally decided on orthognathic surgery, and I had my surgery with Director Shin Hee-jin at Iu Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery! I had heard so much that orthognathic surgery is a major operation and risky, so I think I became even more careful. I looked mainly for places with a lot of experience that specialize in orthognathic surgery, and after the consultation I saw that the tests were systematic and the explanations were realistic, so I decided to do it here haha. Before surgery I was very worried, but looking back now, the biggest change I feel is that the TMJ pain has decreased and my mouth-opening range is gradually becoming more natural. It is not just that my facial shape changed; the fact that it became functionally more comfortable has been more satisfying than I expected. Now at 8 months, since after the six-month mark I have been living almost as if this had always been my face, daily life is no problem and eating is not very inconvenient either. Recently I had an extraction to help the orthodontic treatment go better, and my teeth seem to be settling into place faster than I expected, so that process also feels new and interesting. There are probably many people who keep delaying orthognathic surgery because they are scared, but if you are worried about TMJ pain or malocclusion like I was, I think the fact that you can address both function and aesthetics together is definitely a strong point. I also worried for a long time, but now I keep thinking I wish I had gone for a consultation earlier~~
