Double-Jaw Surgery Reviews

Mandibular surgery for protrusion and open bite, detailed review

Hello. I had been really worried about my open bite. Even when I closed my mouth, the upper and lower front teeth did not meet, so even if I wanted to cut food with my front teeth, I could not actually do it. And that was not the only issue. My mandible protruded a bit more, so my jaw was slightly long and my face looked long too. So at first I wanted to see if orthodontics alone would be enough, so I visited an orthodontic clinic. During the consultation there, I was told that if I did orthodontic treatment, I would need extraction orthodontics, and if I did extraction orthodontics, it would not look pretty aesthetically. The orthodontic clinic recommended orthognathic surgery and suggested several oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics. After looking through reviews and YouTube, I decided on Y Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. When I went for the consultation, the consultation manager was very kind, and the head doctor was also friendly and even cracked jokes, which I liked. After I started orthodontic treatment, I visited once a month, and each time the dental hygienists were kind too. Even before surgery, I had already done orthodontic treatment for about 6 months. I went once a month, and 19 days before surgery I had my wafer made and underwent various tests. The day before surgery, at around 9 p.m., I started fasting for 12 hours. Because I have anemia, I also kept taking my iron supplements diligently while preparing for surgery. The surgeries were orthognathic surgery and two contouring procedures for the jawline and chin on June 23. On the day of surgery, I arrived at the hospital, changed into patient clothes, listened once more to the explanation about the operation, and then went into the operating room. After I lay down on the operating table and the anesthesia started, I kept my eyes closed, and that was my last memory. I do not remember anything right after leaving the operating room, and only after some time did I start to regain consciousness a little. They said I should not sleep yet because the anesthetic needed to wear off, but I kept wanting to close my eyes. My nose was also quite blocked, but it was bearable. On the evening of the surgery day, I kept vomiting blood. The nurse said it seemed to be because disinfectant had entered my mouth. Since I was staying on the hospital bed in a slightly seated position the whole time, my butt hurt so much that I could not sleep well at all that evening or during the night. Aside from those two things, I do not think there was much that was especially difficult. While I was staying in the hospital, the nurses were also really kind and took good care of me. On the second day, I was so sleepy that I just kept dozing off and waking up again, and there was not much else I did. They prepared the discharge items and prescription for me and explained everything. On discharge day, they removed the IV, I packed my things, took the prescription, left the hospital, and got the medication filled. I had come with a guardian on the day of surgery, but when I went home I was alone, so I took a taxi. At home, I ate Newcare and pumpkin juice with every meal and also took my medicine properly. In between, I also drank beverages such as ion drinks. Since I still could not brush my teeth, I diluted the prescribed mouth rinse concentrate with purified water and used it as a rinse. Even after discharge, I could not lie down at home and slept almost sitting up, leaning against the wall. But because of that position, I could not sleep well, and on some days I could not sleep at all. Blood also dried inside my nose, so I could not breathe properly through my nose. Because of that, I think I could not sleep even more. I wore the wafer continuously after surgery and did not remove it even once until the end of the first week. And starting from the first week, since I could brush my teeth, when I visited the hospital I learned and practiced how to insert and remove the wafer while wearing it. At first, when I learned in the hospital and tried to put it in, it did not go well. Still, the head doctor taught me patiently, so at home I was able to remove and insert it well. From the first week, they said I could eat finely blended porridge, soup, and steamed eggs, so I started eating them. After only eating Newcare or pumpkin juice all the time, even plain blended white porridge and steamed eggs felt incredibly delicious. I also ate pudding because it was soft. The next morning, on day 8, I think I brushed too hard, because a little blood came out while brushing. When I asked the consultation manager, they said it was because my gums were swollen. After that day, I brushed carefully without touching my gums and there was no more bleeding. I also diligently cleaned the wafer with a toothbrush. I also wore the band and did warm compresses diligently. The swelling had gone down a little compared to the day of surgery, but not by much. Starting from week 1, I began going out for short walks. Because I still had swelling, I wore a mask, but my jaw had become shorter, so the bottom part of the mask was left hanging. So I folded the bottom part of the mask and wore it like that haha. In week 2, I visited the hospital and had my stitches removed. I thought removing the stitches would not hurt, but it stung and hurt quite a bit. After the stitches were removed, they disinfected the area, and maybe because the disinfectant went into my mouth like it did on the surgery day, I vomited that evening. I could see the swelling slowly going down little by little. Finally, at the one-month mark, I restarted orthodontic treatment and also removed the wafer. From one month onward, they said I could chew soft foods with my molars. I stopped blending porridge and started chewing it with my molars, and I also started chewing noodles. I like coffee and matcha too, but I could not have caffeine until the one-month mark. I had been looking forward so much to reaching one month, and when that day finally came, I went to the hospital and on the way home bought a matcha drink and drank it right away. The next day I had coffee too. From one month onward, I also started eating soft bread like castella. By then the swelling had gone down a lot, but it still was not completely gone. The manager at the hospital said it would take about 3 months for even the remaining swelling to disappear. But the swelling was going down differently on the left and right sides. The difference between left and right was noticeable. Still, from one month onward, I started going out for walks without wearing a mask. As I am writing this review now, it is almost two months since the surgery. The swelling seems to have gone down a bit more than at one month, but only very slightly. After one month, the swelling starts going down very slowly. To write this review, I looked for photos from before the surgery, and they really look different from my face now. In the pre-surgery photos, my face looks very long, but now my jaw is shorter, so my face does not look long. My parents also said I looked really different when they saw the pre-surgery photos. And even when I close my mouth, the upper and lower front teeth touch, so it felt amazing, almost as if I was wondering whether these were really my own teeth. I am already excited to try cutting food with my front teeth. I am so happy with the surgical result, and the head doctor did it very naturally and well.
