I had been under a lot of stress since I was young because of my protruding lower jaw. Two-jaw surgery was always only in the back of my mind, and I was scared and kept putting it off, but at some point I thought I really couldn’t go on like this anymore, so I started looking into hospitals. After checking out several hospitals, the reason I chose this oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic was that I felt a lot of trust from the consultation with the director. The surgical consultation was explained in a very reasonable and realistic direction, so my sense of burden decreased a lot, and the counseling manager and staff were all kind in their responses, so I decided without hesitation.
Day 1 after two-jaw surgery was the hardest. I couldn’t open my mouth well and breathing was uncomfortable, but from day 2, breathing gradually became easier and I was able to take liquid food with a paper cup. Around days 6-7, as the swelling went down, my facial line started to show, and mentally I started to feel that I had made the right decision. I also began to feel tingling sensations returning around this time.
During weeks 2-4, the swelling started going down faster, space inside my mouth opened up, and my speech gradually began to sound more natural. I mainly ate porridge or soft foods, and my sensation still wasn’t fully back, so there were times when I couldn’t feel food dripping around my lower jaw haha. Around week 3, speaking became easier, my mouth opened a bit more, and I felt like my previous oral movement was coming back.
During months 1-2, opening my mouth was comfortable and I started eating regular food to some extent. But chewing still felt awkward, so it took some time to adjust haha. The swelling had gone down to the point where you had to look closely to notice it, and as my face became smaller, I also dieted at the same time and felt my facial contours becoming more refined.
During months 3-5, it felt like I had almost completely returned to everyday life. Now I have no discomfort at all eating, talking, or living like before. There’s no swelling, and I barely feel any sensory abnormality. It looks so natural that I even think, did I really have surgery? lol. I think the speed at which the skin adheres to the reduced face is slower than the speed at which the swelling goes down, but time will probably solve that.
These days, every time I look in the mirror, I feel satisfied, and I also feel grateful to my past self for deciding to have the surgery! In the beginning, like anyone, my condition was at rock bottom and there were moments when I wondered, why did I do this? But as time passed and I saw my changed face, all I can think is that I really did the right thing.
If anyone is considering two-jaw surgery, I want to say that patience is needed for recovery, but the result is absolutely worthwhile. I’m truly satisfied that I had the surgery with Director Kim Jong-yoon at this oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic!
