I underwent double-jaw and facial-contouring surgery with Dr. Kim at Iyu Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I am still a beginner compared with others, but I wanted to leave this review in case writing about my progress over the past month might help someone. First, I did not decide on double-jaw surgery simply because I wanted to become prettier. I had spent a long time feeling stressed about my face and appearance. Seeing my reflection in windows while walking, taking photos, and even making eye contact with other people all felt burdensome. After I began taking off my mask following COVID-19, I increasingly felt that my face looked very different from other people's. Especially in high school, classmates sometimes teased me by calling me a monster or giant, and even drew my face to mock me as a group. As these things kept happening, I began to think that all the big and small misfortunes in my life were because of my face, especially my jaw, and that people staring at me on the street was because there was something strange about my face. When I saw peers laughing, I also found it hard to shake the thought that they were laughing at me. Over time, depression, lethargy, and low self-esteem piled on, making my appearance-related stress even worse. It was not merely that I disliked my face; I felt restricted in relationships and daily life because of it, and especially because of my jaw, I felt I was disadvantaged in many ways. So rather than for purely cosmetic reasons, I decided on double-jaw and facial-contouring surgery because I wanted to escape the stress and inhibition that had continued for so long and spend my daily life a little more comfortably. While preparing for surgery, I researched many clinics, and the biggest reason I ultimately chose Iyu Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was its expertise by field and systematic collaborative-care system. Since double-jaw surgery involves moving bone, I thought the process of adjusting the bite after surgery was also important. I trusted this clinic most because an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in charge of the surgery and an orthodontic specialist responsible for orthodontics each focus on their own field and work collaboratively. It was reassuring that one doctor does not handle everything, but that specialists in surgery and orthodontics communicate closely while managing treatment. The systematic collaboration from surgical planning through the completion of orthodontics was the main reason I chose this clinic. Now that one month has passed since surgery, daily life has become much easier as the major swelling has gone down. It is still difficult to open my mouth wide, but compared with immediately after surgery, the pain and discomfort have decreased considerably. Recovery was not as easy as I expected, but I am satisfied because I can feel myself improving little by little as time passes. I can feel how much more comfortable I am than a month ago, so I am looking forward to seeing what other changes happen next!!!
