I got orthodontic treatment because I had a snaggletooth in my upper teeth and poor alignment in my lower teeth, and I think it took about 2 and a half years total. My teeth did become nicely aligned, but maybe because I did it without extractions, the protruding mouth was not fully resolved. If you definitely want the effect of making the mouth recede, it seems like you need treatment with tooth extractions.
