Double-Jaw Surgery Reviews

Review of orthodontic treatment for facial asymmetry

I had orthodontic treatment when I was in high school. The reason was that I felt the center of my jaw was shifted to one side compared with the maxilla. After getting a CT scan, what I felt turned out to be correct, and the cause was malocclusion of one canine on one side. Because of this, as the bones grew with a misaligned bite during my growth period, not only did the jaw midline become misaligned, but masticatory pressure was applied to one side of the jaw, causing facial asymmetry in which one side of the jaw developed 4 cm longer. At that time, I was told that to completely resolve the facial asymmetry, I would need two-jaw surgery. But I had heard a lot about the risks of two-jaw surgery, so I decided to trust the rest of my growth for the time being and proceeded with orthodontic treatment only. As a result, the facial asymmetry was not resolved, but the degree of crookedness from back then seems to have disappeared. I wore braces for nearly 2 years, and because they were trying to eliminate the malocclusion, it was very difficult: I had screws placed, wore elastics, and used a device that kept my mouth from closing while sleeping. Now I only wear a removable retainer when I sleep, and I also have a fixed retainer attached behind my front teeth.

This is a surgery review pursuing reconstruction.
