During summer vacation when I was twenty, I went along with a close older friend to her double-jaw surgery consultation and happened to have my own face examined as well. That was the first time I learned on the spot that I had a protruding jaw and malocclusion. At the time, I was a college student and the surgery cost was a burden, so I only had a vague thought that I should definitely do it someday. After starting work, I gained some financial room and felt the timing was right, so I decided to have the surgery. More than anything, whenever I saw myself in photos, my jaw looked especially prominent and caused me a lot of stress, so I gathered the courage to overcome this complex. I decided on Iyoo Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which was the most memorable among the hospitals I had consulted at with my older friend in the past. It was also a hospital frequently mentioned on blogs and cafes, and I especially trusted Director Shin Hee-jin’s treatment direction and explanations. I liked that they prioritized safety and precision rather than only reflecting the patient’s wishes, and the surgical style also looked natural, so I booked the surgery right after the consultation. Right after surgery, I was surprised that my mind was clearer than expected, but as time passed, I became sleepy due to the effects of the anesthetic gas. I remember hearing the explanation that I needed to keep breathing by deeply inhaling and exhaling, and even though it was hard, I followed along diligently to prevent pneumonia. More than pain, the difficulty breathing and having to sleep sitting up were painful. From day 3, I slowly walked around the lobby at dawn to manage swelling, and before discharge, they suctioned the secretions from my nose and throat thoroughly, so breathing became very comfortable. On day 7, the facial swelling had gone down a lot and my face began to settle into a rounder shape, so I felt I was gradually stabilizing. I had the stitches removed in week 2. It hurt momentarily, but fortunately it was over quickly. After the stitches were removed, the swelling began to go down noticeably, and I could eat soft foods to some extent, so the stress around meals decreased. From week 3, I could naturally go out, and I was able to return to daily life, including meeting people and going on dates. People around me also told me that the swelling had gone down a lot, which gave me confidence, and when I looked at my face in the mirror, I started to really feel the surgical effect. At 1 month, my jawline became increasingly defined, and my facial contour began to look more refined. I could also eat normal meals, and my chewing function recovered enough that I could eat rice with a regular spoon and cut up foods like shrimp or mushrooms to eat them. As my meal portions increased, I did gain a little weight back, but people around me said I had become prettier, so it actually made me feel good. I could feel my face settling naturally overall, and I became able to go out with more confidence than before. It has already been 3 months since surgery. Currently, all major swelling is gone, and only a little residual swelling remains. Rather, I still have an appropriate amount of volume in my cheeks, so I often hear that I look youthful, which makes me satisfied. My chewing function has mostly recovered as well, so except for hard or tough foods, I can eat most foods, and my quality of life has improved greatly. Most of all, before surgery I always covered my jaw when taking photos, but now I confidently take front-facing photos without that worry. I am living so comfortably that I forget in daily life that I had surgery, and I have gained a lot of confidence. I truly think I made the right decision to have this surgery, and I sincerely thank Director Shin Hee-jin for opening the door to my second life!
