This is my 1-year review after having double-jaw surgery + 2 types of facial contouring surgery (square jaw, revision genioplasty) at Y Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery on April 16, 2024 ! I had congenital prognathism, and I had been receiving orthodontic treatment consistently since I was young. However, orthodontics alone did not create the face shape I wanted, and the protruding lower jaw still remained a source of stress. After becoming an adult, I decided on surgery, but because double-jaw surgery was such a major procedure and I was scared, at first I only had genioplasty. But as expected, my chin did not move back properly, and despite having surgery, the complex about my protruding lower jaw remained the same. After spending several years like that, I eventually decided on double-jaw surgery, and after looking into several hospitals, I had surgery at Y Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I had so many concerns before deciding on surgery, but I felt I could not put it off any longer. The first few days after surgery were really hard. It felt like the worst pain I had ever experienced, and because it was so difficult, I even briefly regretted it and thought maybe I should have just lived with this face. In the early stage, I had to have intermaxillary fixation, so I could not chew food and could only consume liquids, and the hunger and frustration together made each day feel like hell. When I finally thought I might be able to eat a little, orthodontic treatment started right away, so even that did not go as I wanted. Even so, what allowed me to endure all that pain was the fact that the protruding lower jaw that had stressed me for so long was gone. As my facial line changed and the swelling gradually went down, when I began to see an impression completely different from before, all the difficult thoughts just disappeared. As time passed and my face shape settled, the painful early period naturally faded from memory too. Before surgery, my self-esteem was low because of my appearance, and I was always withdrawn. I avoided taking photos and felt uncomfortable standing in front of people. But now, even the way I feel about myself has changed. I no longer avoid mirrors; rather, I feel good every time I look in one. It is not that everything is solved just because my appearance changed, but what is certain is that this surgery gave me self-esteem and confidenceㅠㅠ Now it has been 1 year since surgery, and recovery is somehow in its final stage. I can chew without difficulty now, and I am living daily life without discomfort. People around me also tell me I became naturally prettier, and I often hear that my overall vibe has changed. I also heard a lot that “it doesn’t look like I had surgery,” and since that means I changed naturally, it made me feel good. Double-jaw surgery is certainly not something that can be decided lightly, but if, like me, you have long been struggling with appearance or functional issues, I think it is an option worth seriously considering at least once. Of course, the recovery process is not easy, but it is also a surgery with a lot to gain. For me, it was a precious experience that changed so many things. I hope my review will be even a little helpful to those considering surgery. I sincerely hope people who struggled with prognathism like I did will find an opportunity to love themselves more.
