The surgery is over. 2025.04.21 10:30~16:30 Admission 12:30~13:50 Surgery ## 1. Changing clothes Once you go in, you change clothes first. You take off everything except your underwear and change into a patient gown. Right in front, you brush your teeth and wash your face with mouthwash and cleanser. Then you go in and wait. Overall, the facilities were comfortable and sophisticated. Classical music was playing too. I liked that it seemed to ease my nerves a bit. ## 2. Preoperative consultation You hear explanations such as an olfactory test, how the surgery will proceed, and how postoperative care should be done. You sign the surgical consent form. I think it would have been good if I had “asked for CCTV recording at this time and recorded this process.” Basically, I trusted the attitude and atmosphere of the doctor and the hospital staff, so I did not necessarily need to confirm it, but if preparing for any contingency, I think it would be good to do it if possible. The consultants mention before surgery whether CCTV is installed and whether viewing is possible, but they do not go out of their way to mention that you must explicitly request CCTV recording before surgery. Therefore, if you want it, you must explicitly request recording. I liked that the person consulting with me thoughtfully said that if I sent photos of the nose design I wanted, they would print them for the operating room so they could be used as reference during surgery. ## 3. Payment The cosmetic part is prepaid before surgery. About 1.6 million won. ## 4. Surgery When it is time, you move to the operating room. The operating room was not a gloomy space with steel doors like in medical dramas; it had all-white walls and a very fresh color. As I had heard, there was CCTV, but when I was conscious, the light was not on, so I could not tell whether it was operating. When you lie on the operating table, they insert an IV + tie your hands and feet (they said it was because you could move while unconscious) + trim nasal hairs and disinfect the inside of the nose. They also disinfect the face and ears. They said anesthetics and other medications would be administered, and disinfection was done, but after that I was unconscious. It would have been better if they had told me I would lose consciousness when the anesthetic was injected. From before I lost consciousness before and after surgery until after I came back to consciousness, only the preparation nurse and nursing assistant were there, and there was no doctor, so from a patient’s perspective it was disappointing that I could not confirm whether this doctor had really performed the surgery. ## 5. Discharge After surgery, I returned to the recovery room, lay there well, changed clothes, and came back. I felt a bit chilly after surgery, and I liked that they turned on the heated floor mat. When it was time for discharge, an operating room assistant came in, explained the discharge process, and escorted me to the elevator. ## 6. Additional payment Apart from the cosmetic nose portion I paid for before surgery, I paid for the remaining functional nose portion. About 1.5 million won. (Later, on the way home, I got a call saying that during surgery my own autologous material was insufficient, so because donated rib cartilage was used, an additional payment of 1.2 million won would be needed at the next visit. I had been informed that donated rib cartilage could be used if material was insufficient during surgery, so I accepted it.) ## 7. Pharmacy and insurance claim After discharge, I took the prescription and insurance-related documents I received at discharge to the pharmacy in front of the hospital and picked up the medications. Until the splint is removed after 3 days, you only need to take medication, but **after splint removal, you have to disinfect the nose yourself, so I also bought the sterile cotton swabs needed at that time**. The medications and cotton swabs together came to about 40,000 won. ## 8. Home I returned home in the car of a family member who came to pick me up. On the way, I bought pumpkin porridge, which is said to be good for reducing swelling, and I think it was a good choice. I think porridge that can be swallowed without chewing is better than porridge containing regular grains of rice. Maybe painkillers are good these days, because even after discharge when the anesthesia wore off, there was almost no pain. However, since I was breathing 99% only through my mouth, it was stuffy. I stacked two pillows and tried to sleep in a slightly seated position. While sleeping, my mouth dried out from mouth breathing and I woke up occasionally, but it was a tolerable discomfort. In the evening, I was fine enough to take a 30~40 minute walk and eat without problems. --- Things I liked about the hospital: - Comfortable and calm facilities (maybe because I visited in the off-season) - You can expect humane kindness and thoughtfulness from the staff before and after surgery Things I found disappointing about the hospital: - I could not see the attending doctor’s face before and after losing consciousness in the operating room. Things I personally found disappointing: - I think it would have been good to explicitly request CCTV recording during the preoperative consultation and record that request, just in case.
