I had always had a complex about my bulbous nose, so I had my first surgery when I was 20. I had silicone on the bridge, ear cartilage for the nasal tip, and alar reduction. I forgot the hospital name because it’s been years, which probably means the surgery went well enough that I didn’t have to worry about it. The surgery was completed very naturally, with no pain or scars, and there wasn’t a huge change, but I still gained a bit of confidence. But I still had a bulbous nose, and I really, really wanted a slim nose. I kept thinking, if I just reduced the alae a little, it would look much better... So in the end, I had alar reduction surgery in June. The result? It was a complete failure. They did an incision and also tied and pulled with thread. The consultant said there would be no foreign-body sensation, but every time I smiled, my alae felt pulled and it felt like the cartilage hurt. On top of that, the scars were so severe. During my first surgery, the scars were a faint white and barely visible, but after the second surgery, they were left red like knife cuts. One side was like that, and the other side developed raised scar tissue. I don’t know how nostrils operated on the same way can be left with scars of different shapes, but anyway... Also, about 2 months after surgery, I was laughing while watching a variety show, and there was a snapping sound from my nose, and then it became easier to laugh. The nasal width also went back to how it was originally. Yes, the thread snapped. It’s seriously unbelievable. They never told me the thread could snap, and they never told me to be careful when laughing. When I went to the hospital, the doctor who had told me during my initial outpatient treatments, when I asked what to do because the scars were so severe, that they would gradually settle and to apply scar ointment well, said when I went back 2 months later that even they had never seen scarring left this severe before. I was seriously furious... They did say they would do revision surgery, but when I tried to make an appointment, they were fully booked and pushed back again and again, so they said they would have time starting in March... Even now, every time I smile, my alae pull and throb, so I force myself to open my mouth only a little when I smile, which makes my expression look weird, and the scars are causing me so much stress. I’m furious that the revision surgery date is in March. I wish they would at least remove the remaining thread quickly... sigh... And even while saying this, I’m still thinking I hope my alae get reduced a lot when I have the revision, so I must be crazy...
