Because my lower jaw is small, the front teeth on both the upper and lower jaws were badly misaligned. There was no functional problem, so I deliberated for several years before finally getting orthodontic treatment. It really made me feel that money is powerful... I had braces on the upper teeth only for about 11 months, then straightened the lower teeth after the upper teeth had aligned to some extent. I have not had extractions yet, but I may have my wisdom teeth removed later.
