I underwent treatment without extraction, and started because there was a gap between my canines. It was done from late 2018 to early 2020, and now I wear a fixed retainer on my front teeth plus a removable retainer every night when I sleep. I don't know if it was because I didn't have teeth extracted, but I had none of the commonly mentioned problems, like an aged look or gum issues. However, if you are considering extractions, it seems better to think it through carefully first. During orthodontic treatment I visited the clinic every month, and after treatment I went once every 6 months for 2 years. There were no additional costs at all.
