I did not have asymmetry. Even when I took photos and flipped them horizontally, my face was ordinary, with no major difference.
I had a big complex. A long, large face. So I had double-jaw surgery.
Medical staff from Seoul National University. A place with many reviews and a reasonable amount of advertising and promotion. A large hospital with even a luxurious atmosphere. Those things comforted me.
I still regret not recording it back then, because the director said this: ‘After surgery, your face may become visibly much smaller to the naked eye. I’m good at surgery.’
Doctors rarely praise themselves so openly. That’s why I remember it even more vividly. Because having a large face was my complex, even before the surgery, I cried while saying thank you. Thinking, now I finally won’t be called big-faced anymore.
After the surgery, I worked hard on recovering.
Now that time has passed,
I truly regret it. I regret it to death.
Far from my face becoming smaller, I developed asymmetry that I never had before. My jaw became twisted, and even with orthodontic treatment, my teeth do not bite together properly. After that, I visited the hospital and confronted them about it.
My face did not get even 1% smaller, and people around me only say that my face is asymmetrical. So I asked the hospital what on earth had happened.
Usually, they compare facial photos from before and after surgery while explaining, right? But when they clicked through the before-and-after photos to compare them, after surgery, my jaw was twisted, and the size of my face was truly exactly the same…… ha……. Because even the doctor could see that, he seemed at a loss for what to do.. Then he said,
“Look at these photos. It changed. A 1 mm difference is a big difference,” and he kept saying that. To me, it looked so identical that I truly could not feel even a single 1 mm difference. Even when I confronted him, he would not acknowledge it. Even people around me do not know. They do not even know I had double-jaw surgery. They thought my jaw had become twisted because of an accident.
I told him to look at the photos and confronted him, asking what on earth was different besides my jaw being rotated, but he said, ’I did everything I could— But I never told you your face would get smaller— You had asymmetry, so I corrected that—‘
He said such absurd things, you know? Instead, he even started shouting?
My hands were really trembling. I wondered if I was the one who was crazy,
so I went for consultations at three other double-jaw surgery hospitals.
At every place I went, they took facial X-rays, and I compared them. What the doctors consistently said was this: “This cannot be called a smaller face.”
My eyes were not the problem. When I cried, saying that my wish was for my face to become smaller and asking him to fix that complex, he had clearly comforted me with all kinds of sweet talk, saying my face would definitely become much smaller, that it could look up to 2 cm smaller to the naked eye, and so on.
Now he says he never said that, and that I had surgery because of asymmetry.
No, then when I confronted him about why such severe asymmetry appeared after surgery, he said, ’This is what it looks like after correcting it as much as possible—’ and said something truly ridiculous.
Suddenly, he showed me the records, and apparently I had asymmetry. Why did I never hear this at all when I received consultations and examinations? And records are something they can secretly alter themselves, aren’t they,
When I consulted with the doctor and the manager, I swear on my parents that the word asymmetry itself was never brought up by me, nor did I ever hear it.
The one and only purpose for which I paid such a large amount of money and had surgery was simply that I wanted my face to become shorter or smaller. But now even my jaw is twisted, so I cannot even take an ID photo.
When I demanded revision surgery, they charged a separate revision surgery fee. They played innocent, saying there was no problem on their part. Before surgery, they were so kind, but right after the surgery was over, they immediately acted like it was none of their business— I really feel like I have been made a fool of. Where would I have the money for revision surgery? And I’m afraid it could fail again, so I’m too scared to do it there. Since I did not record anything, I cannot even prove how unfair this is.
A life where only my face was large would have been better.
Please think once more before having double-jaw surgery. If you do it, I hope you make sure to do it somewhere that is truly right for you.
* I enlarged the photo a lot, so the image quality is quite broken, but compared with my pre-surgery passport/visa photo, you will be able to tell at a glance how much my mouth has become twisted.
