First of all, I had no hereditary vision loss. Back when I was in elementary school and glasses looked cool, I went to an optician for a vision test, and my eyesight was actually 1.2, right? But I pretended I could not see well and got a 0.2 reading, then had glasses made. Back then, even the vision tests at opticians were really rough, so they just made them for me. After that, I kept trying to watch TV from too close and overstrained my eyes, so my vision really did keep getting worse. By late high school I started wearing contacts. Wearing glasses made dry eyes in winter, steam rising when eating ramen, and washing my face all uncomfortable, and it gradually became too stressful. So around my mid-20s I went to an eye clinic and got a proper vision test. The test showed that my corneas were on the thick side, so LASIK was possible too, but they said that if I had PRK, I could probably have repeat surgery more than twice later if my vision dropped again. After hearing all those stories about eyesight getting worse again, I worried about it and eventually decided on PRK. I remember the surgery cost about 1.2 million won. (It was about 10 years ago, so I am not exact T_T) The procedure itself ended really quickly, but for the next 3 days I basically just slept. Every time I opened my eyes, they felt so cold and painful, and even when I opened them briefly everything looked blurry, to the point that I wondered, 'Did something go wrong?' But as I recovered and my vision started coming out above 1.0, it felt like a whole new world! It was my first time realizing how comfortable it is to wake up and see immediately in the morning. I had PRK together with a friend, but the side effects were different for each person. Right after surgery, even if I kept only one eye still, tears would keep flowing endlessly, it felt cold and painful, and it lasted for hours. It did not happen for just a few days in a row, but kept recurring every few days T_T It was so strange that I went back to the clinic, and they said the cornea was not attaching well, so it was lifting a little and causing tears. They said it would get better with time, but there were times when I woke up and suddenly my eye hurt like crazy!!!!!! One eye would just start pouring tears, and at those times it was really uncomfortable and painful. Luckily, after a few years, at some point the cornea must have attached well, because those symptoms almost disappeared. Even now, once in a great while, when I wake up, one eye can still hurt sharply, but it is nowhere near as bad as before. Still, looking back, I think PRK was truly the right choice. Even now, about 10 years later, my vision is still above 1.0, and it has not worsened again, so I am very satisfied. I also think I should have done it sooner, and even though I keep telling myself I should take care of my eyes, I still look at my phone at night haha, but my vision has stayed good so I am very satisfied!
