Since childhood, I had what people commonly call an overbite, that is, a Class III malocclusion. Every time I went to the dentist, I was told about orthodontics or double jaw surgery, but because this had been my familiar state since birth, I did not feel it was a major problem and lived that way. However, after becoming an adult, pain started in my temporomandibular joint when eating, and as I looked in the mirror and realized that my facial asymmetry was more severe than I had thought, I came to feel that I needed to solve the functional problem. After much deliberation, I decided to undergo double jaw surgery. I thought double jaw surgery was not simply a procedure to change appearance, but a surgery in which correct occlusion and functional recovery are important. So I looked for hospitals mainly through oral and maxillofacial surgery rather than plastic surgery, and after consulting several hospitals, I decided to have the surgery at Lee Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. During the consultation, Director Lee explained my condition realistically without exaggeration, and his conservative diagnosis actually made me trust him more. There was also a well-established collaborative system with the orthodontics department, so I felt I could leave the surgery in safe hands. It has now been 11 months since I had double jaw surgery. The biggest change I feel over time is that using my jaw has become truly natural. In the past, there were moments when I unconsciously paid attention to jaw movement or my bite, but now I hardly think about that at all. The fact that I almost never need to think about my jaw in daily life makes me feel that recovery has progressed a lot. The feeling while eating has also changed a lot. Before, I had a habit of chewing on one side, and food did not feel fully ground up, but now I feel that both sides of my teeth are used in a balanced way, which is much more comfortable. Even without paying special attention, I naturally chew on both sides, and it feels as if the chewing force is transmitted steadily, so mealtimes have become much easier. I often hear that my pronunciation when speaking is clearer than before. I did not notice it myself, but because people around me said that, I also thought that before the surgery I may have been using my jaw a little uncomfortably without realizing it. The appearance also settled in naturally as time passed. Rather than looking drastically different, I often hear that my overall impression looks softer and more stable. People around me often reacted by saying it did not look like I had surgery, but that something had improved and my impression had become more relaxed. Right after surgery, the recovery process felt long and I had many worries, but as time passed, both the functional and aesthetic aspects naturally stabilized. Now it has blended into my daily life to the point that I do not particularly think about the fact that I had surgery. Looking back, I think deciding to have the surgery with Director Lee at Lee Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was truly the right choice. I had many worries at first, but now I am generally satisfied, and I hope this can be even a little helpful to those who are considering double jaw surgery.
