Double-Jaw Surgery Reviews

Comprehensive 1-, 3-month review after double-jaw surgery for severe receding chin and protruding mouth

Hello. It has already been 3 months since I had double-jaw surgery and contouring procedures 2 types (square jaw, chin) for my severe receding chin. Time has passed much faster than I expected. Before I knew it, 3 months had passed, so I am writing this review. I had long been self-conscious about my receding chin and protruding mouth. During the COVID period, it was okay because I could cover my chin with a mask, but once I started living without a mask again, it began to bother me again and I gradually felt myself shrinking back. I did not like taking photos, and photos taken by other people felt even more uncomfortable. I always took selfies while looking for an angle to hide my chin, and even when I smiled, my expression felt awkward. As this stress kept building, I had long thought that I wanted to solve it someday with surgery. When I first started looking for a hospital, I searched a lot through the internet, YouTube, and many reviews. The most important criteria for me when choosing a hospital were as follows. Real-time CCTV monitoring available Enough surgical experience Not a factory-style hospital (one surgery per day) Whether there is an orthodontics department working together A style of surgery that is not rushed and is safe As I searched based on these conditions, I came to want a consultation at Y Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I saw many comments in reviews saying the director was blunt, so I was a little tense, but the actual consultation was not unfriendly at all and instead felt calm and trustworthy. The director, the orthodontic doctor, and the hygienist were all kind, so I was able to receive treatment comfortably during 1 year and 2 months of pre-orthodontics. After that pre-orthodontic treatment, on January 5, 2026, I had double-jaw surgery and contouring surgery (square jaw, chin) with Director Lee Seok-jae. On the day of surgery, the doctor told me it could be hard, so I went into the operating room prepared, but honestly it was not easy. My throat felt extremely tight, and because of the anesthesia I was in a dazed state and my stomach felt uncomfortable too. After discharge, the pressure from the swelling and the physical weakness from not being able to eat what I wanted were the hardest parts. But strangely, after about a week I felt much better, and from then on the recovery progressed faster than I expected. The recovery process also went smoothly. Week 1: Disinfection Week 2: Suture removal, starting mouth exercises, returning to daily life Week 4: Wafer removal, post-orthodontic treatment start Even after removing the wafer, I had to be careful with food for a while, but as the range of foods I could eat gradually expanded, daily life became much more comfortable. As I kept doing mouth-opening exercises consistently, my opening range gradually recovered too, and now I can live without major discomfort compared with before surgery. Now that 3 months have passed, most of the major swelling has gone down and my facial line has become much more natural. There still seems to be a very slight amount of residual swelling and a process of the muscles adapting, but even compared with one month after surgery, I can feel that my face has become much more refined. Right after surgery, I was worried, "Will this swelling really go down?" but as time passed and I saw it change little by little, I realized that when it comes to swelling, the most important thing is not to rush but to wait. The most satisfying part is the overall proportions of my face. Before surgery, because of my receding chin, my mouth looked more protruded and my facial line felt heavy, but now the jawline has come out naturally and the balance of my whole face is much better. In particular, my side profile has changed the most. In the past I avoided side-profile photos as much as possible, but now I can take photos without paying special attention to it. Since I no longer have to think about my chin when smiling, people often say my expression has become much more natural. People around me also often say my face looks much smaller now. My case involved moving the lower jaw and chin forward to improve the receding chin, and even so, they say my facial line has become more refined and my overall impression looks much slimmer and better balanced. My family, as well as friends and acquaintances I met after a long time, have said my impression is better than before and that my vibe has changed a lot. The functional side has improved a lot too. At first my bite felt awkward and my chewing strength was weak, so eating was uncomfortable, but now I can eat most foods without major trouble. I am also continuing post-orthodontic treatment, and hearing from the hospital that my recovery is going well made me feel even more reassured. It is not completely over yet because post-orthodontic treatment remains, but I am already truly grateful just for having recovered well without major side effects so far. I am looking forward to how my face and muscles will settle more naturally as time goes on. I hope this review helps anyone who is considering surgery. I too drew courage from reading many reviews before surgery, so I hope my experience can be a small help to someone else as well. Once post-orthodontic treatment is all finished, I will come back with a final review then. Thank you.
