I originally had treatment for my underbite with orthodontics in middle school. At the time, orthodontics improved it to some extent, but as I continued growing, my jaw also grew along with it, so the underbite came back. I looked into whether I could treat it with orthodontics again, but in my current condition I was told it would be difficult to solve with orthodontics alone, and in the end I decided on double jaw surgery. Since it is a major surgery, I researched many things when choosing a hospital, and I also thought the consultation was important. The part I liked most during the consultation was that when I asked questions I did not get vague answers or roundabout explanations; instead, they answered each question plainly and clearly. They explained exactly what was possible and what would be difficult, which actually made me trust them more, and after the consultation I felt much less worried about the surgery. So last month on July 13, I had double jaw surgery and contouring surgery for two areas, square jaw and chin, with Director Lee Seok-jae at YI Oral Surgery. The recovery after surgery was better than I expected. People usually say the first week after double jaw surgery is the hardest, so I was very worried too, but personally, what was more frustrating than the pain itself was that I could not move around easily while hospitalized and breathing felt uncomfortable. On day 1 after surgery, I was just completely dazed. The pain did not feel as severe as I expected, but moving my body was awkward and breathing was uncomfortable, so I felt stifled. From day 2 onward, maybe because I got a little used to breathing through my mouth, the breathing discomfort improved somewhat, but being stuck in the hospital bed all day was actually harder. Lying there all day just looking at my phone made time pass incredibly slowly. On day 3, I was discharged after the nurse explained various things, such as precautions after discharge and how to care for my mouth. Once I went home and could rest and move lightly, it actually became more manageable from that point. After discharge, I took light walks and moved around a little within reasonable limits, and I felt far less suffocated than when I was hospitalized. Of course, at first there was a lot of swelling, some numb areas, and I also had to pay attention to food and oral care, so there were uncomfortable parts. Still, as time passed, each thing gradually got better, and although it was not a dramatic change day by day, after about a week it was clearly different. In particular, as the swelling slowly went down and the foods I could eat increased, daily life became more comfortable. I am still not fully recovered, but compared with before surgery, I can definitely feel changes in the overall balance of my face and in my bite. There is still some swelling left, so I think the changes will feel even bigger once more of it goes down and recovery continues. Even so, so far I think deciding to go ahead with double jaw surgery was the right choice.
