Double-Jaw Surgery Reviews

My honest one-month review of the orthognathic surgery process after jaw surgery...

<Before surgery><1 month after surgery> It had always been a big complex since I was young. Whenever people talked, I felt like they were only looking at my mouth. My photos also turned out strangely, and the mouth area of my face seemed especially prominent, so I worried a lot. Because of that, I naturally lacked confidence in taking photos or standing in front of a camera. What I wanted was to be able to smile confidently without worrying about that anymore, and to express myself in front of the camera with confidence. The reason I decided on surgery at ‘Iyu Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery’ was that I watched a lot of YouTube videos, and when I actually visited the hospital, the overall atmosphere and facilities were very clean and trustworthy. Above all, the director explained everything so well and felt so reliable that I became convinced this was a place I could trust with peace of mind. Days 1 to 3 After surgery, maybe because my stamina is still low, my whole body feels dizzy and I have no energy. Especially my lower jaw feels numb, and I can’t open my mouth well, so eating and talking are not easy. When I lie down, I keep feeling like phlegm is coming up into my throat, so it’s hard to fall asleep. Still, my condition seems a little better than yesterday, so that at least is a comfort. Days 4 to 5 I started eating porridge little by little, but since I still can’t open my mouth well, I’m spooning it up little by little with a small ice cream spoon. Still, once food goes in, my body definitely seems to hold up better. It’s hard to sleep soundly at night because of the pain, but during the day I can speak to some extent, even if I’m a bit slurred, so I’m relieved. Day 6 When I look at other people’s review photos, it’s clear that swelling differs a lot from person to person. For me, the area around my neck is especially swollen, so my neck looks short and has a heavy feeling. The stitched area also feels stiff and heavy. Still, I can feel myself improving little by little day by day, and that’s a big comfort. I can open my mouth a little wider than before, and talking has become more natural. I also seem to be drooling much less than at the beginning. Day 7 There isn’t a huge change compared to yesterday, but I think the swelling has gone down a little more. The area around my mouth still feels heavy, and my expressions are a little awkward, but it’s much more comfortable than at first. Week 2 Compared to the first week, the swelling has clearly gone down. However, the swelling around my neck has been slow to go away, so it still feels a bit lumpy. I was so worried about removing the stitches, but it didn’t hurt at all, and the director removed them in an instant, so it was over quickly. On a pain scale of 1 to 10, maybe a 2? It was almost unnoticeable. Watching recovery vlogs from people after jaw surgery on YouTube gave me some courage too, so I started eating mostly soft foods. Things like castella and Jjapagetti were fine because I could eat them without chewing. My pronunciation is definitely much better than before, and from week 2 I was able to remove the wafer, so communication became much easier. Week 3 The swelling keeps going down. There’s still some left, especially around the cheekbones and neck, but my face feels like it’s gradually returning to its place. It’s definitely much better than at the beginning, and every time I look in the mirror, I think, ah, there really is a change, which makes me feel proud of myself. At 1 month I think most of the major swelling has gone down now, and only a little residual swelling remains around the philtrum, chin, and cheekbones. Still, compared to before surgery, my facial asymmetry has improved a lot, so overall I’m really satisfied. My face line feels much more organized than before, and I can feel it becoming more natural, so I’m glad I decided to go through with the jaw surgery. Thank you, Director Shin Hee-jin, for performing the surgery so well.
