It has already been 1 year since I had double jaw surgery. I want to honestly share my experience and changes over the past year, hoping it helps even a little for those of you considering surgery. A year ago, I had double jaw surgery and contouring surgery 3 types (cheekbones, square jaw, chin) at Why Oral Surgery! Before the surgery, I had long suffered from severe malocclusion and jaw joint pain. Every time I ate or talked, my jaw wouldn’t fit together properly, which caused a lot of stress, and my confidence had dropped because of my jaw asymmetry and protruding appearance. I had also heard from people around me that double jaw surgery is harder than expected, so it took a lot of deliberation and fear before I finally decided to go through with it. I was worried about the risks of the surgery itself, the long recovery period, and whether the result might end up unsatisfying in a way I didn’t expect. But looking back now, choosing surgery with courage seems to have been a major turning point in my life. Right after the surgery, the swelling was more severe than I had thought, and there was pain too, so it wasn’t easy to adjust. For a while, I lived on soft foods like porridge and rice gruel, and I was careful even when talking or laughing. But with the detailed aftercare from the medical team in charge and my own determination to recover, my body healed quickly as time passed. Around the 3-month mark, most of the swelling had gone down, and my appearance gradually started to look more natural. Eating and talking also became much easier, so returning to everyday life was far more manageable. By 6 months, I looked so natural even I was surprised, and the jaw joint pain had improved to the point that I could hardly feel it. And now, 1 year later, I feel that my quality of life has changed beyond comparison with before the surgery. The biggest changes are, of course, my appearance and confidence. In the past, taking photos or meeting people felt uncomfortable and burdensome, but now I’m no longer afraid of looking in the mirror or taking pictures. Being able to smile naturally and meet people with a brighter expression is the biggest change of all. There were many changes in terms of health too. Before the surgery, my jaw would often slip out of place or hurt at the joint, which was really difficult, but now those symptoms have almost disappeared, so eating and talking are much more comfortable. Since I also did orthodontic treatment alongside it, my teeth are more neatly aligned, which makes me satisfied that my overall oral health has improved as well. The reactions from people around me were also positive. Family, friends, and even acquaintances I hadn’t seen in a long time said things like, “You look much brighter and more confident,” and “Your overall impression has become softer.” In particular, there were many cases where people I hadn’t seen in a while didn’t recognize me at first glance, so my appearance has definitely changed in a positive way. Of course, the recovery process was not always smooth. In the early stage, I had some discomfort such as numbness and difficulty opening my mouth, but through steady rehabilitation exercises and regular checkups, most of those issues were naturally resolved. As time went on, I became more and more comfortable, and now my daily life feels so natural that I almost forget I even had surgery. Above all, I want to give myself the biggest applause for deciding to go through with it. Double jaw surgery is by no means a light decision, but for those who, like me, spent a long time worrying before gathering the courage, I think you can absolutely experience positive changes. I hope my experience can help even a little for those who are considering surgery. And once again, I want to emphasize that for recovery, it is most important to keep up with the care instructions from the medical team and take good care of your own body.
