I had double-jaw surgery in February 2013, and since it is now August 2020, it has already been 7 years and 6 months. I’m satisfied. Even if I went back to 7 years ago, I would absolutely do it again. It’s not an easy surgery, but the reason I decided on it was that my malocclusion was originally very severe, and I was told at the hospital that it was a severe malocclusion in the top 3%. It was a situation where I needed it both functionally and cosmetically. If your situation is about the same as mine, I think you would be willing to endure about a month of discomfort with eating after surgery, some swelling, and so on.
To summarize, the advantage is honestly that, cosmetically, going from abnormal back to normal is an enormous merit. Of course, things like the discomfort I had when eating before surgery also improved, but the best part is that the way people look at me changed a lot. Another thing is that compared with nose or eye surgery, it is a really major surgery, but since it is not an externally visible area, it is the least noticeable lol. After surgery, I never saw anyone suspect me by asking whether I had double-jaw surgery. As for the downside, to mention something that people who are still planning surgery may not have considered, even though I had my surgery done by a really famous doctor who was close to being the top authority, I still have slight sensory numbness on one side of my face. In an area about 4 cm next to my lip, sensation is very dull and it bothers me in daily life, so I tried acupuncture and various other things, but it did not improve. Time did not solve it either. Still, because my quality of life changed after surgery, I have given up and live with the mindset of accepting this much.
