Reason for surgery: I had a severely recessed chin and bad snoring, so I became very self-conscious about showing my side profile, and it felt like it was turning into a complex. Among the options, I heard that chin advancement surgery could help not only with appearance but also with snoring, so I decided to have the surgery.
Recovery process: Honestly, I struggled so much on the first day that I even regretted having the surgery. The pain was tolerable, but the hardest part was that breathing was extremely difficult.. I think the problem was that my chin had been advanced in two stages, and I also had a somewhat large amount of bleeding, so the area under my tongue was very swollen. Because of that, they expected my swelling would go down more slowly than other people’s, but the clinic staff all took really good care of me, and personally I iced it almost all day long, so after a week I was able to catch up to the usual pace of swelling reduction. For the first few days, I couldn’t sleep because I had to sleep sitting up, so I thought, if I can’t sleep anyway, I might as well keep icing it, and I think that actually helped a lot.
Swelling: For the first 1-2 weeks, I was extremely swollen, almost to the level of having a square jaw, but from week 3, I could visibly feel the swelling going down. After that, I went around without wearing a mask.
Food: During the first week, I only ate things like porridge. In week 2, I tried regular food, and I started feeling pain along with a cracking sound from my jaw, so after that I ate only porridge for about 2 more weeks. If you feel anxious, I think it would be better not to go through what I did and to wait a little longer for recovery before trying regular food..
Thoughts at 6 months: I still have a pulling sensation in my chin muscles, but I’m scheduled to have the pins removed soon, and they said they would tie the muscles a little more loosely then. Other than that, the appearance has settled much more naturally than at 3 months, so I’m very satisfied. If you have a complex about this, I think it may be worth considering at least once, even just for your confidence.
