I’m currently going around for rhinoplasty consultations. I have a deviated nasal septum, so I assumed they would naturally use my septal cartilage while removing part of it, but one plastic surgery clinic said they only operate with autologous costal cartilage no matter what, while another hospital said they use septal cartilage and, if it’s insufficient, they use donated costal cartilage. Is it okay to use donated costal cartilage instead of autologous costal cartilage? From what I found, cartilage inevitably gets absorbed, and autologous costal cartilage has a lower absorption rate while donated costal cartilage has a higher absorption rate than autologous costal cartilage. I’m curious whether people who don’t use autologous costal cartilage choose donated costal cartilage simply because of the scar.
