I was diagnosed as needing double jaw surgery because of a malocclusion problem, so I looked into several clinics. I had consultations at five places in total: Zoom, Seoul Face 21, Hwang Soon-jung, Y, and EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. In the end, I chose EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The decisive reason was that, during the consultation, Dr. Shin Hee-jin gave me a strong impression that she prioritized the patient’s safety and recovery above all else. She did not recommend surgery unconditionally, and I developed deep trust because she sincerely considered my condition haha. Since I was a case that needed presurgical orthodontic treatment, I underwent orthodontic treatment for about 6 months before proceeding with double jaw surgery. [Immediately after surgery ~ Week 1] The double jaw surgery took about 4 hours, and after I opened my eyes in the recovery room, I was moved to the hospital room. The pain was not as severe as I had expected, but it was a little difficult that I was not allowed to sleep after general anesthesia. I kept waking up because I was breathing through my mouth due to nasal congestion, but after the nasal device was removed the next day, breathing became much easier haha. After discharge, I eased my hunger with New Care and spent the whole day practicing fitting the wafer as the hospital instructed. On day 3, the facial taping was removed, and the swelling looked more noticeable. From day 4, I started taking light walks, and on days 5–6, I also did light exercise, smiling-expression practice, and mouth-opening practice. On day 7, I received intraoral disinfection at the clinic and felt that my occlusion was gradually stabilizing. [Weeks 2–4] In week 2, the stitches and elastics were removed. Speaking became much easier, and I tried soft foods such as cake and grilled fish. In week 3, I could open my mouth about three fingers wide. About 60% of the swelling had gone down, and the swelling remained most around the philtrum and chin area. As I practiced smiling often, my expressions gradually became more natural haha. [Months 1–2] At 1 month after double jaw surgery, the swelling was going down slowly, so I consistently did the aerobic exercise called the “Stairway to Heaven.” I avoided hard foods, but I could eat chicken, noodles, and soft fried foods without much trouble. My jaw muscles felt stiff, but I could move my neck freely. At 2 months, about 80% of the swelling had gone down, and the only areas with reduced sensation were the upper gums and lower jaw. [Currently at Month 3] Now, there is almost no externally visible swelling. Sensation in my lower jaw has recovered by about 50%, and I sometimes feel stiffness. I can also eat hard or chewy foods to some extent, so there is no major inconvenience with meals haha. Looking back, it felt overwhelming at first, but thanks to EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Shin Hee-jin’s meticulous surgical plan, and my own self-care, I was able to recover this quickly. What I want to tell those preparing for double jaw surgery is that the recovery process is long and requires patience, but the satisfaction is just as great. My sensation has not yet recovered 100% either, but both function and appearance are changing in a way I am satisfied with. If you are considering double jaw surgery, I recommend choosing a doctor and clinic you can trust, as I did. I can confidently recommend EU Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Dr. Shin Hee-jin for double jaw surgery haha
