I was vaguely scared that if I got nose surgery at a plastic surgery clinic, my nasal function would be ruined, and I was worried insurance might not cover it, so I only considered ENT clinics.
To get straight to the point, I went through an extremely rough process, and I still have many problems now.
The most frustrating and difficult part was that communication really did not work. When I asked something, they would go with 1. “I don’t remember.” 2. “I’m not sure...” I got so sick of the lack of communication then that I developed a habit of obsessively preparing very detailed question lists whenever I went for consultations elsewhere.
But do you know what’s funny?
Even when I brought such detailed question lists, the director of this ENT clinic never once gave me a clear answer. It was like talking to a wall. I was boiling inside, but I couldn’t get angry. Why??
First of all, I had surgery because I had a crooked nose and a deviated septum. The doctor said, “Shall we do osteotomy and try putting in 2 mm silicone?” Since it was my first time, I didn’t know much, and because it was my first cosmetic surgery, of course I became greedy, so I decided to put it in.
But my glabella area isn’t wide. After osteotomy, my nasal bridge suddenly became prominent, and with silicone added on top, it got to the point where my eyes looked like they were about to merge into one...
But prior explanation about that?? There was none at all. And where the silicone was placed, they didn’t smooth down the hump, so the silicone border showed through from the outside and moved around. On top of that, because the silicone made my nose higher, the crooked nose didn’t improve; it looked even more emphasized than before. There was no explanation before surgery, but when I asked after surgery why my crooked nose was still the same, only then did they say that because I have facial asymmetry with my lower jaw rotated to the right, they couldn’t align my nose in a straight line...
Then at least they should have explained that limitation beforehand..
I was thinking I should wait and get revision surgery there, so I held it in for about 8 months, traveling back and forth between Gwangju in Jeolla-do and Seoul more than 10 times, paying 10,000 won in consultation fees every time, printing out question lists and asking questions, doing that whole thing.
The one fortunate thing in all this misfortune is that during the second surgery, after I earnestly asked for crooked nose correction, they shifted all the nasal cartilage parts toward the left, so on the outside, the crooked nose improved quite a lot. A little still remains. And after removing the silicone, it became more natural... But the nasal bone part that became higher from the osteotomy is still the same. So the nasal bridge stands out sharply and has a bit more length. (This part is okay.)
But as I entered the 3rd year after surgery, the nasal tip built with septal cartilage dropped a lot, and every time I smiled, my nostril wings really became like the bulbous nose of a Hahoe mask. I just assumed this must be a limitation of septal cartilage material. I guessed that because the nasal tip and columella had dropped, the nostril wings also looked that prominent.
But that wasn’t it. As I looked in the mirror, I realized only the right nostril wing was indented...
Earlier I said they moved all the cartilage parts to the left to correct the crooked nose. So when I put my finger deep inside my nose, there is hard cartilage on the left, but on the right side of my nose, there is no cartilage part.
So in my opinion, to correct the nose that was crooked to the right, they moved all the cartilage parts to the left, and because of that, the inside of the right side has no support, so the body volume became insufficient and symptoms like indentation or depression of the nostril wing seem to have developed.
For now, I’ve asked the hospital about this,,, but since there have been so many past instances of failed communication, honestly I don’t have high expectations.. What I’m truly dissatisfied with is that, for example, “A is possible, B is not possible for these reasons,” or “If we fix A, the drawback B will inevitably come along with it.”
This kind of prior explanation has never once come out of this doctor’s mouth. It’s not like he has a bad impression or looks harsh or aggressive. It feels like even when I ask questions, they go in one ear and out the other?? It is seriously draining...
There isn’t even a KakaoTalk channel, and inquiries are only possible by texting the manager. They just say it’s difficult to connect by phone with the director, and it feels like they only make junior staff answer calls, which makes me feel even more drained. If you’re really curious, pay 10,000 won and come back for an in-person consultation, plus 80,000 won round-trip train fare... That must be their mindset.
Even though I paid consultation fees and had consultations more than 10 times and never received a kind or accurate consultation, I never openly showed that I was upset in front of them. After going to plastic surgery consultations this time about nasal tip drooping, the hump, and the remaining crooked nose, after much consideration, I decided to accept all of it and not go as far as revision surgery, but when I saw the indentation of the right nostril wing, seriously... Everything I had held in came back up, and I truly thought this was too much, no matter how far it goes. To be precise, I asked because I was curious about this, but seeing them avoid answering again as expected, I didn’t have expectations, but I’m so disappointed,,
I’m giving sincere advice: go to consultations at several places, research diligently, and get surgery somewhere that properly explains the principles. Functional nose surgery does not automatically mean ENT. Facial contouring does not automatically mean dental oral and maxillofacial surgery. Of course, specialized fields do exist, but I hope you avoid the mistake of being too boxed in and narrowing your options.
Make sure to determine how accurately they understand your problem, whether they understand what you are asking, and whether they clearly explain what can be improved and what the limitations are. Also, look at their surgery photos and make sure their aesthetic sense matches yours, so you don’t end up paying money and getting stressed for a long time like me. Anyone who has been to revision surgery consultations knows, but the cost is seriously enormous...
