I don’t wear makeup often, and even when I do, I keep it really light, so I kept repeating “natural” like a mantra when I got my double eyelid surgery. It feels like just yesterday, but it’s already been 10 years. I got it done not in Gangnam/Sinsa/Apgujeong, but near where I lived, by an elderly doctor at an old plastic surgery clinic that was famous among locals lol. The building was shabby and the facilities weren’t sleek, but I still vividly remember being surprised because the place was packed with people. Even up until I lay down on the operating table, I was worried, “What if it goes badly because the doctor’s hands are shaking?” Even now, apparently his hands don’t shake and he’s still healthy, so it was needless worry haha. The surgery fee was really cheap too, and since I had fatty upper eyelids but was getting buried-suture surgery, I asked him about 500 times because I was worried it would come undone. He told me not to worry because it absolutely wouldn’t come undone and explained why, but I don’t remember the reason. I only remember that he had a really good career. We talked about epicanthoplasty and lateral canthoplasty too, but he said doing all of that would make it far from natural and recommended only double eyelid surgery, so my young self was really upset. But as time passed, maybe because it looks more natural this way, even my family forgets that I had double eyelid surgery. Maybe because he removed some eyelid fat too, the most fascinating thing is that the line stays maintained even if I gain weight. The mystery of the human body... I didn’t have sedation anesthesia, only local anesthesia, and it hurt like crazyㅠ It felt like it hurt more than having a fingernail pulled out without anesthesiaㅜㅜ But during the surgery, he kept asking me to open my eyes and checked the line, and I could also look in the mirror and check for myself whether the line was naturally set, so I think that was actually better. I’m the type who feels reassured only when I see it with my own eyes! At first, up until 2 weeks after surgery, I watched the bruising from fat removal and the major swelling go down and thought, “Oh my, maybe my body is suited for surgery~” But in the end, the minor swelling took longer to go down than I expected. For me, I think all the minor swelling went down over about 3 to 6 months. From 6 months to 1 year, my weight changed little by little too, and the line settled in, so they completely became my own eyes lol Now I visit him every Parents’ Day and say thank you~ My ex-boyfriends and my current boyfriend all don’t know I had double eyelid surgery haha... Last time I told my current boyfriend, “I got double eyelid surgery hehe,” but he thought I was lying. So I didn’t say anything more.
Everyone has different aesthetic standards, but I like it because it looks like I was born with it. If you want something natural rather than flashy, I think it’s good to let go of all greed and go light. And if you’ve just had surgery and are anxious because you think the result might be bad, try to relax and wait until the swelling goes down. If the surgery wasn’t done wrong, eventually, with time, it all becomes natural and pretty. I hope everyone makes a good choice~
