At Lee Sang* in Suwon, a clinic famous for eye and nose plastic surgery, I had an appointment scheduled to have surgery in a week, had discussed the surgical method, paid the reservation fee, and went in to fill out the surgical consent form.
But the director looked at my eyes and said, “Last time they were 80 points, so why are they 70 points today?” and then said, only now, that my eyes needed upper blepharoplasty. While talking, he confidently said that he does not operate on anything below 60 points.
That was the first time I felt offended, but still, he is famous in this field, so I thought maybe that was just his personality.
I said this was different from what we had discussed last time, and that since we had decided on the buried suture method then, I wanted to proceed with the buried suture method as planned.
Then the director told me not to do buried sutures, and to do upper blepharoplasty and epicanthoplasty instead.
So I said upper blepharoplasty or epicanthoplasty would leave bruising or surgical marks for a long time, and since I had to go back to work in 5 days, it would not work for me. (Because of the nature of my job, I work in a customer-facing service position where my face is constantly visible, so I explained that it would be difficult to go to work looking like that.)
Then he got angry and said, “If that’s the case, why are you rushing to have surgery now?” and told me to do it later. He acted as if he would not do it unless it was upper blepharoplasty.
I said I had read reviews of this clinic, and it seemed like swelling or marks lasted a long time after surgery, and the bruising seemed severe too, and that there were stories about the side effect of the eyes not closing. Then the doctor said, “I’m saying that’s not the case, so who on earth are you listening to?” and he spoke in an intimidating, scolding tone.
So I said this was different from what I had been told during consultation, and the doctor told me, “This is a recommendation.” I said that to me, it did not feel like a recommendation but like coercion. Then he threw my chart paper down hard and said, “Fine, I’m not doing the surgery.”
I could not believe that someone with this kind of mindset could be so famous in this industry. I felt so wronged and empty that I had wasted all the time I spent going around to consultations, and even paid a consultation fee to someone like this.
Since I’m an office worker, it feels awful that I’ll have to wait again for another long holiday like this Chuseok, and spend time going around again to look for a clinic.
But I now think it’s fortunate that I did not entrust my eyes to someone like this. I’m leaving this post hoping no one else gets hurt like I did.
