I got orthodontic treatment when I was in middle school, finished in 9th grade, and I’ve just been going for checkups once every 1 or 2 years. In my case, treatment was absolutely necessary, and I had 4 teeth extracted. Since I was young, it was scary, but maybe because I did it at a clinic that was the ultimate in kindness, once I got used to it later, I went almost as casually as going there to sleep. I’m not very sensitive, so on the day they tightened it and the next day, my teeth kept feeling ticklish and weird, but it was bearable. If your protruding mouth is severe like mine, you’d probably start from a young age, right? Thinking about it now, I think doing it in middle school was good. That’s because there are more hospital visits than you might think, and it hurts a bit every time they tighten it, so if I had done it in high school, I don’t think I could have focused on studying. What most people don’t know before orthodontic treatment is that even after treatment ends, you have to live with a retainer attached to the back of your teeth for life. There’s zero discomfort, and it only means the area I have to brush carefully has gotten a little wider. I once didn’t brush well and the inside near the retainer decayed, and it took a really complicated process to fix, so since then I’ve been brushing diligently.
