I had LASEK surgery at Eyereum in 2013. Since it was an eye-specialty hospital, there were a lot of patients and the wait was long.
At the time, both my myopia and astigmatism were severe, so both eyes were -7 to -8 diopters.
My astigmatism was especially severe, and they said LASIK was not possible at all. They said that if my vision got any worse, even LASEK would not be possible. I had to choose between LASEK and implantable contact lens surgery, and because lens implantation was more expensive and I felt reluctant about putting something inside my eye, I decided on LASEK.
The surgery ended quickly without pain. But once the anesthesia wore off, the pain really came rushing in. For 5 days, I had to lie still and recover.
The hospital told me that because my astigmatism was severe, my corrected visual acuity might not come out as well as expected, and that over time it could gradually drop from the initial corrected vision. After surgery, my corrected visual acuity came out very well at 1.0 and 1.2. Living without glasses was a whole new world.
The side effect after LASEK was glare. During the day, sunlight enters my eyes much more than before, so even when ordinary people are fine, I get extremely dazzled. It seemed like a side effect of LASEK. It is good to bring sunglasses in summer and when driving during the day. At night, I already had night blindness originally, so it feels like maybe it got a little worse..? However, because LASEK corrected my astigmatism and eliminated halos/glare during night driving, driving became much more comfortable.
The hospital checked my condition through follow-up observation for half a year after surgery, and since there were no problems for half a year, I have not visited the hospital even once since then.
I had been living so comfortably without glasses, and now I am in my 11th year. Since around last year, I have felt that my astigmatism has become a bit worse. I think the problem was using my phone for a long time in dark places. Now my corrected visual acuity seems to be around 0.7 to 0.8. Recently, in my 11th year, astigmatism has come back and the difficulty with halos/glare has returned, so I am once again realizing that I lived comfortably for 10 years thanks to LASEK.
I do not remember the exact surgery cost, so I wrote it roughly, but I think it was over 2 million won, and I remember it was definitely more expensive than other hospitals.
For people with poor vision, I highly recommend LASIK or LASEK surgery. If you are considering surgery, I recommend trying it before your vision gets worse and surgery becomes completely impossible.
