I had worn glasses for a long time, so they had a lot of scratches, and if the prescription is high, glasses are pretty expensive. Rather than that, since it was also vacation, I decided to get SMILE LASIK. My parents are doctors, and they asked someone they know, so I just went to the biggest place that had been doing it for the longest time. I had the surgery about 3 days after deciding to get LASEK. On the day, I had various tests for about an hour. My vision was around -6, and there wasn’t anything in particular with intraocular pressure or things like that. Everything was average, but retinal cell count?? The average for that is 2000, and mine came out around 3500.
After about 2 hours, I quickly went into the operating room. They were running it kind of like a factory, and they put in eye drops or something in advance, and when it was my turn, they lasered it for about 10 seconds?? It burned. Since they put the clamp or whatever fixes the eye directly on my eye, I thought it would hurt, but maybe there are no sensory cells in the eye, because I didn’t feel anything. When they lasered it, my vision turned white starting from the center. After that, the doctor scraped off the white stuff with something like a hook. As soon as they scraped it off, I could just see well. I found that so fascinating. It looked like being in a barbecue restaurant with no ventilation, but it was only hazy and I could see well.
However, after this, for about a month, my eyes were often sensitive to light. When eye fatigue built up, I sometimes even got headaches. Usually it was when inflammation had flared up, and if I put in the prescribed antibiotic eye drops and took a nap, it was okay. After struggling for about a month, now it just feels comfortable like my own eyes, and it’s so nice. My appearance also got much better, and I’m very satisfied that I don’t have to carefully place my glasses away before sleeping.
I don’t have a comparison group, but I feel like mine is a very successful case. They say people whose surgery goes badly feel like dying, but since neither I nor anyone around me has had a problem, I don’t care. First of all, don’t listen to what other people say, and if you’re scared, don’t do it. But if it succeeds, I think it’s a very good surgery.
