10 Years After LASEK

Getting LASEK is one of the things I truly think I did well in my life. When I was young, I thought wearing glasses looked cool, so I watched TV up close. Once I started wearing glasses, maybe because I was in adolescence, my eyesight kept getting worse, and every time I changed glasses, the prescription got stronger. Before I knew it, my vision had worsened a lot and I think it was around -4.5. When I became a high school student, I started wearing contact lenses. Circle lenses were trendy for a while, so I wore them for about a year, and my eye condition got so bad that I moved on to daily soft lenses and then hard lenses. I really wanted vision correction surgery, so I got checkups at an ophthalmology clinic every year. But because high myopia, thin corneas, and large pupils were all unfavorable conditions, the ophthalmologist in Apgujeong who appeared on Unanswered Questions recommended that I not do it, so I waited for the technology to improve. After about 7 years of only getting checkups, I was told the technology was at the highest level, so I decided to have the surgery. Because I was afraid of side effects, I got LASEK from Dr. Ko at Su Yonsei Eye Clinic, who was called “God Ko” at the time. Nowadays the technology is even better and many people get this surgery, but I can’t even describe how nervous I was when I did it. My pupils were originally large, so I had glare and halos. During surgery, they also used a medication treatment to help reduce glare and halos, but I am still cautious when driving at night, and lights at night still feel dazzling. Still, I’m so happy to live freely without glasses and contacts. Right after surgery, I think my visual acuity reached 1.2, and now it seems to be around 0.8.
