Since I was a student, I was so stressed by my long face and long underbite compared with people around me that I got into the habit of covering my face. If I didn’t wear makeup, I couldn’t go outside without a mask. Because of that stress, I spent a really long time researching double-jaw surgery, and after persuading my parents, I started going for consultations as soon as the CSAT was over. In my case, I had to come up from the countryside, and because of my parents’ schedules I had to finish all the consultations in one day. After much deliberation, I visited several hospitals I had chosen in advance and got consultations, and after combining my parents’ and my own opinions, I decided on Y Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The biggest reason I chose Y Oral was safety. Being able to watch the surgical process on CCTV, and the director’s extensive experience, gave me the most confidence in many respects. Also, I felt sure they would be able to create the face shape I wanted, and seeing the after-surgery photos made up my mind. On top of that, the director and the manager gave me detailed explanations during the consultation, which helped me decide quickly. In my case, pre-orthodontics was needed, so after about 6 months of pre-orthodontic treatment, I had double-jaw surgery and contouring surgery on July 1 (square jaw and chin). Of the things I brought, the source bottles and tissues were the only ones I actually used. Everything else I needed, like the neck pillow, was already in the hospital room, so I could stay comfortably. On the day of surgery, right before going in, I met the manager and the director one last time in the morning, and even right up until I entered the operating room I was told over and over that today would be a hard day. The moment I woke up after surgery, I immediately understood why they had said that. The first day was really hard. I had to breathe relying only on the air being pumped into my nose, but as my nose gradually got blocked I really couldn’t breathe and felt like I was going to die. My face was swollen and I had a drainage tube in my mouth, so breathing through my mouth was uncomfortable too. Drinking water was uncomfortable as well, so I only sipped enough to wet my mouth when it got dry. Because I had to stay sitting up, my back and neck hurt, and I woke up every 30 minutes at the least and at most every hour, so I almost stayed awake the whole time waiting for morning. I think that was the hardest time because time didn’t pass at all. From night onward I became a little more clear-headed, so I got through it by reading other people’s reviews. The next morning, they removed the drainage tube and the urinary catheter a little earlier than the time they had told me. Once everything is removed, it feels much more comfortable. It was much easier to get through the time than the first day. That was when I saw my face properly for the first time, and the feeling was really amazing. I had sent pictures of a face with a short chin because that’s my preferred look, and when I looked in the mirror my face had become so much shorter and my chin was completely set back, and I loved it.. I drank as much New Care and water as I could, and whenever I woke up I also went out for walks often. After discharge, I listened to the precautions and left the hospital. To be honest, when I was hearing the precautions I was so out of it that I didn’t really understand what was being said, but I gradually learned as I kept reading and going through recovery. Because I live in the countryside, after coming home I stayed at home the whole time. Since the pills were large, taking the medication was a bit difficult. Cold compresses whenever I swelled really helped. When I lay down, my face would swell and my ears would feel clogged, making it hard to sleep. Up to that point I thought I had to sleep lying flat, so I piled up stuffed animals to make a pillow and slept that way somehow, but after seeing posts from people who said they were still sleeping sitting up even after more than a month, I immediately bought a one-person floor sofa. Even now, almost a month later, I use it well as a semi-reclining position. They said days 4 to 5 are when the swelling is at its worst, and I was so swollen that I wondered if it was really okay to swell that much, so I was worried. The swelling was so severe that I couldn’t even think about drinking a lot of protein. If I don’t eat much, even when I’m wearing the lifting band, my head and ears keep pounding.. On day 7, when I went for my first follow-up, I was so exhausted that from then on I decided to drink a lot of protein and walk more often.. Starting on day 7 I could eat soft foods like soondubu and porridge, so I ate soondubu before taking the train at Seoul Station. The first time you eat liquid foods after only having protein, it really feels moving. Eating was still a bit hard, but I started eating a lot more than when I was only taking protein. From days 7 to 16 (the second follow-up), I kept walking 30 minutes a day and using warm compresses. I mostly ate things like porridge and steamed eggs. And I also ate a bit too much of snacks that are easy to swallow, like roll cake.. I heard some people even gain weight after double-jaw surgery, and if I do it the way I did, I think I would gain weight too. Around the second week, I went to the second follow-up and had my stitches removed. A few days before that appointment, the lower stitch area had started hurting, so personally getting the stitches removed hurt a lot.. The parts that hadn’t been throbbing didn’t hurt, but the lower stitches that had started hurting made me tear up a little. What I liked most after the stitches were removed was being able to eat spicy or oily things. Anything I could swallow, I could cut up to rice-otto size and eat little by little. If I cut up creamy foods like risotto or finely chopped pasta, and also donuts or bread with jam or fresh cream on them, they went down well, so I ate a lot. As my appetite came back and I increased my walking time, my stamina came back quickly too. Up to now, in week 4, I’ve been walking more than 30 minutes every day and using warm compresses for the past two weeks. Once I went to the hair salon I used to go to after a long time, and since my face had changed a lot I thought they might not recognize me, but they recognized me right away, and everyone who saw me said I looked prettier, which made me happy. I don’t really have anything hard left now, and I just hope the swelling goes down a lot soon.
