Hello. It has now been a year since I had jaw surgery for my long, flat face. Looking back now, I think the stress I felt before surgery because of my underbite was much greater than I expected. It bothered me when I looked at my face from the front, but the side view was especially a complex for me. Every time I took a photo, it felt like my chin stood out, and when talking with people I would unconsciously bite my lower lip to make my chin look less prominent. I also had the habit of letting my hair down or covering my face with my hand. I had jaw surgery and contouring procedures on the square jaw and chin at Y Oral Surgery, and one year later my quality of life is really much better compared with before surgery. The biggest change is confidence. I used to hate taking photos because I was so conscious of my side profile, but now I do not worry much no matter what angle I am photographed from. I still sometimes unconsciously bite my lip or try to hide my face with my hair, but whenever that happens, I laugh and think, ah, I do not have an underbite anymore. That is how much more at ease I feel. I am also satisfied with the functional side. My orthodontic treatment is still ongoing, so there is a bit of discomfort from the braces, but I hardly feel any side effects or awkwardness from the surgery itself. Most of the sensation has returned, and there is no problem at all with daily life. I am living so naturally now that even the hard memories from right after surgery have faded. The reactions from people around me were also really good. Acquaintances I had not seen in a long time said my impression had become much softer, and many told me my face looked smaller too. In the past, I used to hear that I looked strong or sharp, but now people say my overall impression is much more natural and relaxed. Every time I hear that, I think I made the right choice to have the surgery. Sometimes I do wish I had had it before getting married. I think I could have made more memories while still younger and with a more confident appearance. But at the same time, I am glad I decided before it was too late. I am grateful that I can live with a new appearance now!! If there are any of you who, like me, have been worrying for a long time because of an underbite, I hope you get enough consultation and choose what suits you best. Of course surgery should be decided carefully, but for me it was one of the most satisfying choices of my life. It was not just that my face shape changed; I became more confident in front of people, taking photos became fun, and even the way I see myself changed.
