Hello! I had double-jaw surgery and two types of facial contouring surgery (square jaw & chin) at Y Oral Surgery on July 18 because of severe malocclusion, and now one month has passed haha At the dental clinic, they took an X-ray and removed the screws above my gums. They told me that although the bone has not fully fused yet, I’m in a condition where I can chew soft meat, about the texture of a hamburger patty.
It’s now the one-month mark, but at week 2, they removed the rubber bands that had been tying my mouth shut! Maybe because the stitches were removed at the same time, I became able to move my lips more easily. The feeling of opening my mouth for the first time was awkward, like it kept closing on its own regardless of my will... It was somehow nice but also strange haha Once I could open my mouth, I was able to eat soft foods with pieces I could swallow, instead of just drinks. Of course I still couldn’t chew, but I was so happy just to be able to put something, anything, down my throat... I bought and ate different kinds of porridge, and I thoroughly enjoyed cheesecake and castella with milk. I also put jelly and chocolate in my mouth and let them melt, and I naturally started applauding. Clap clap clap. Above all, I was so happy that I could brush my tongue, which had been sealed away. Even though the rubber bands that had been with me for 2 weeks were removed, except when eating, I had to put replacement rubber bands back on. I changed them to new rubber bands once a day, and it was surprisingly fun.. Since I often had situations where I had to talk while wearing the rubber bands, I wondered if I might become a master ventriloquist. Most people couldn’t understand what I was saying, though.. They said I needed exercises because the muscles around my mouth had been damaged, so I practiced the vowel sounds a-e-i-o-u diligently too. Maybe because there was swelling in my cheeks and upper lip area, people around me said my round look resembled a tadpole lol Still, the swelling has gone down a lot compared with before, so I’ve been going out often, and I really like it.
And at the one-month mark, at the dental clinic, they took an X-ray and removed the screws above my gums. They told me that although the bone has not fully fused yet, I’m in a condition where I can chew soft meat, about the texture of a hamburger patty. About 40-50% of the swelling has gone down, and sensation has returned everywhere except the roof of my mouth. The dentist said everything else was fine, but because my mouth opening is only just big enough to fit two fingers, I need to practice opening my mouth until the muscles feel stiff When I came home, I tried hard to open it, but as expected, it wasn’t easy. They said I no longer needed to wear the wafer or replacement rubber bands, so I became able to move my mouth freely. Because I had more freedom, I was careful not to move my mouth too aggressively in daily life or chew food too forcefully. The spaces from the teeth extracted for pre-surgical orthodontics had not fully closed yet, so I couldn’t start post-surgical orthodontics right away.. I really wish I could start post-surgical orthodontics soon, but the clueless extraction spaces seem to be needlessly rebelling. I expect it will probably take another month for the spaces to close nicely... but I was a bit disappointed. I resolved to gradually increase how wide I can open my mouth and eat the foods I want to my heart’s content. I wasn’t originally someone who was that close to food, but I didn’t know I was such a good eater!! I’m seeing myself in a new light.. I hope the bone fully fuses soon. I really want to eat tteokbokki...
Before, even wearing a mask was stressful because of my protruding lower jaw, but now I can wear a mask comfortably. I’m happy My family jokes and asks who I am every time they see my face, and I also find it fascinating every time I look in the mirror. Even though the swelling hasn’t fully gone down yet, just the fact that my jaw has moved back is moving in itself.. It feels like a dream that I no longer have to hide or worry about my side profile.
