Before I start writing... Cosmetic surgery really has to be decided carefully, and because one choice can change your life, you need to think a lot before deciding. I’ll write sincerely as if I’m talking to a close friend~! Even if this post is a bit long, I’m writing it hoping it helps someone, so please read it kindly
Since my school days, I was stressed by eyes and a face shape that made me look angry and cold when my face was expressionless. There was even a friend who subtly tried to ostracize me because they didn’t like my sullen-looking expression. So about a year after graduating high school? I decided to first get double eyelid surgery, which seemed less financially burdensome and lower risk. After briefly searching for plastic surgery clinics, I had a consultation at one place. And... at the first place I consulted with, I didn’t just book it, I went ahead and had the surgery;
At the time, I lived outside Seoul, so going back and forth was really troublesome, and when I searched a little online, there were many comments saying they were good at double eyelids... It also said KBS Excellent Designated Hospital? so I think I went for it because of some vague sense of trust? that I didn’t even understand. Looking back now, I was completely like a naive country kid who had never even been to Seoul, and I don’t know where that confidence came from. You’re all smart, so don’t do this.
Anyway, when I had surgery, that clinic had two directors, and among them people said Director G.S.H. was good at eyes, so when I talked with the consultant, I specifically said I wanted to get it from Director Kim. When consulting with the consultant, I said absolutely natural!! My purpose wasn’t to become pretty, I just wanted to change the cold-looking impression, you know? But she kept saying that if I did medial epicanthoplasty together, my eyes would get bigger and I’d look much prettier, and that she’d give me a discount if I did them together, so there was some pressure. I clearly emphasized “natural” quite a lot, repeatedly, but she kept recommending additional surgery, which did feel unpleasant. I have had one firm value about cosmetic surgery then and now! If something doesn’t make me uncomfortable in daily life, untouched natural features are best lol I did have a little Mongolian fold, but it wasn’t making my impression look stuffy, and in the first place this wasn’t surgery to become extremely pretty. I wasn’t interested in anything except double eyelids, so despite a lot of persuasion, I didn’t give in! Well, it’s been a long time, so I don’t know if that person still works there. For ptosis correction, they said I absolutely had to do it because I had ptosis and weak eye-opening power, so I proceeded with double eyelid surgery + ptosis correction. I think the cost was around the 1.8 million won range?
I had the surgery under general anesthesia, but I hear these days almost all eye surgeries are done under local anesthesia. They say if you have general anesthesia for eye surgery, you should suspect a ghost doctor... is that right?.. I think Director G.S.H. did operate directly, but the problem is that I started when the clinic was almost closing, so I was the last patient. Maybe because they were trying to finish quickly, another director from the same clinic came in during the surgery and operated on one of my eyes; I woke up in the middle of the surgery and then fell asleep again, and when I woke up in between, I heard the two directors talking. I remember the conversation was just things like asking why they were operating so late, and ordinary small talk... After the surgery ended and I went home, I applied cold compresses and slept on the sofa. Even after the anesthesia wore off, the pain wasn’t severe, and I think the heavy, numb feeling from swelling was worse.
A few days later, I felt the asymmetry of my eyes was pretty severe, and I really liked one eye, but the other eye had this strange feeling like my eyeball was being pressed by the thread inside the eyelid? So I told the consultant that during surgery I thought another director had touched one eye and that I had heard voices, and I said it felt like that was why they became uneven. Then I heard a fixed-answer kind of response: people’s two eyes can’t originally be identical, and not only me but everyone has some asymmetry lol And she said that the other eye wasn’t operated on by another director, that all surgeries were done by Director G.S.H., and the other person had only tied the final thread knot.
Still, I wanted to think positively. At that time, there were many people whose eyes alone were botched. Even so, I thought mine had turned out naturally like I wanted, and the feeling of my eyeball being pressed happened when I opened my eyes slightly upward. You don’t usually have many reasons to roll or lift your eyes upward, right? I thought it didn’t really cause major inconvenience in daily life, so I just let it pass.
Now they have almost become inner double eyelids, and since it was an incision there is some scarring, but because the line wasn’t set high, it doesn’t show much! Since I had emphasized naturalness so strongly from the start, when the director was drawing the line, he said I might regret it later if we did it this way, because as I aged and my eyelids drooped, they could become inner double eyelids, and after doing it I might not be satisfied because they were too thin and might need revision surgery. But I’m satisfied that my impression became softer haha
These days there are so many options for line shapes and canthoplasty too, including all-direction canthoplasty~! Please make sure to carefully look into a style that suits your own face, go to several consultations, and decide:) And unless it’s something where, in your life, if you don’t fix it, your self-esteem will hit rock bottom and it seems to interfere with daily life, I hope you avoid doing it if possible. If surgery goes well, that’s such a relief, but if it doesn’t... you throw away the money and it’s a shortcut to falling even lower, right? Unless it’s something where even if it fails, it would be better than your current life, don’t do it~ untouched natural features are best. Teeth are the same, right? No matter how good implants are, they’re not as good as your own teeth. (Sorry, I worked as a dental assistant for quite a long time, so my example is like this lol)
Now that I’m older, to solve another concern about my appearance, I’m going to look into things thoroughly and go to multiple consultations, unlike when I was young! If you ask, “You said untouched natural features are best, so why are you getting surgery again!” my cheekbones and jaw were a concern almost as serious as my eyes Actually, I should have done them before my eyes, but fear and money held me back... The sturdy impression that comes from a masculine face shape... sigh; next time I’ll talk about face shape. Thank you so much for reading my story to the end. For friends who are about to have surgery, I hope you get good results. For friends who are thinking about surgery, I hope you think more carefully about whether it’s really a part you need, and I hope my post helps you make a good decision. Whatever decision you make, it will be the best and a good choice. I’ll support you.
