This post is a personal record based on my own experience and opinion as a medical consumer, and its purpose is to provide information to people considering plastic surgery, so I state clearly that it is in no way intended to slander any specific hospital. This is a review of arm/axillary breast/posterior bulge/bra line liposuction received from Director Kim Yoon-geun at the Sinsa D R clinic on 1/24. I had a consultation with Manager Jo Bo-young on 1/13 and decided on surgery. The main reasons I chose this hospital were: 1) they make only one incision, 2) the hospital's emphasized anesthesia method that is safe and less uncomfortable for the patient, and 3) although he wasn't my operating surgeon, the chief director Cho Jae-ho is quite well known in the fat surgery field, and I hoped his surgical know-how would be reflected in the other doctors as well. I came in for the morning surgery slot on the 24th and went home around 2:30. Right after returning home, I visually checked the surgical results, and while the posterior bulge and bra line seemed much improved, there was no visible change in the arms or axillary breast. In particular, the side bulge, which I wanted improved the most (the fat that protrudes from the upper arm when standing at a 45-degree angle), did not seem improved at all, and I felt that the final result probably would not meet my expectations. Contrary to what many people know, swelling does not actually rise much immediately after liposuction; rather, it starts gradually 24 to 48 hours later and continues for about two weeks. (See the paper here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3901919/) And even in people's personal accounts after liposuction, the immediate post-op state is said to be closest to the actual result. But beyond swelling, what made me worry most was the area of bruising. Seeing no bruising at all on the lower or inner part of the arm, I thought the suctioned area might have been less than 270 degrees. When I called the next day, the manager said it was still too early to judge the final result and that it would take three months for effects to appear, so we should wait. But as the manager already knew, I had to leave the country in March, so I could not wait that long. More than just worrying by myself, I felt I needed an expert opinion, so I went to another hospital and asked for one. They said something similar to what I had expected. Based on the bruising pattern, the suction area did not seem wide, and especially the posterior bulge area probably would not change much. Judging from what was visible now, there was a high chance I would not get the straight arm I wanted, and although I could wait 6 months and get revision surgery, it would probably be hard to expect major changes by then. They did say it would be worth considering revision before adhesions form. After much thought, I got revision surgery at another hospital yesterday (2/14). When my measurements were taken before surgery, the left and right arm circumferences were 29.5 and 30 cm respectively, and compared with before the first surgery at D R, each had decreased by 1 cm, so it wasn't as if there was no effect at all. In any case, after the long-awaited revision surgery! As you can see from the photos taken right after surgery, the side bulge is gone in the front and 45-degree photos, and in the 90-degree view the arms are straight. I even thought I should have done it here from the start, and although I spent twice the money and went through both physical and mental hardship, in the end I got what I wanted. :) As stated above, it's possible I was simply unlucky, and results can differ even at the same hospital depending on the operating doctor, so please keep in mind that everyone's experience can vary. At first I was angry that I had just wasted money and got no effect at all, but in any case it was my own decision and I do not want to shift responsibility onto the hospital, the manager, or the director. That said, plastic surgery demands a significant amount of physical and mental energy and also involves financial burden, so I am writing this in the hope that others will take my experience into account and think things through more carefully, so they can achieve what they want without going through trial and error if possible. This is where I'll end.
