I had always been self-conscious about having a large face and uneven facial contours, so at first I underwent three-part facial contouring surgery. I was planning a career where looking good on camera was important, but when I saw myself on camera after the contouring surgery, although my facial line was smoother, the left-right asymmetry had not improved. Rather, as the width and empty space of my face decreased, my face even seemed longer than before. While looking into various options, I learned about double-jaw surgery for the first time. After that, based on the unfounded belief that oral and maxillofacial surgery would be safer, I focused on oral and maxillofacial clinics and eventually had double-jaw surgery at a clinic near Gangnam Station. My bite was not severely misaligned, but there was almost no external change. They said the surgery would take about five hours, but I went in in the morning and when I opened my eyes, it was nearly 8 p.m. Even the postoperative X-rays showed that the left-right asymmetry and facial length had not improved. On top of that, I developed snoring that I had never had before, so for a while I gave up on surgery, thinking, “I really don't want to have any more surgery.” But because it is a face I see every day, I continued to worry about it. Once the person I live with also began pointing out my snoring, I started looking into clinics again, thinking this would truly be my final surgery. I personally had consultations at about 15 places, including both dental and plastic-surgery clinics, not only in Seoul but also university hospitals outside the capital region. Having already undergone two surgeries, I desperately did not want to fail this time. I researched clinics very carefully, thinking I would not decide if even one part failed to make sense to me. The only place that explained not just the external aspects but also the functional issues I had been experiencing after surgery—snoring, airway, and temporomandibular joint problems—was CBK Plastic Surgery. At other clinics, when I said my snoring had become worse, I was even told, “It is unrelated to the surgery, so go to an otolaryngologist.” But at CBK, they properly listened to the problems I was experiencing and thought together with me about what might be causing them and how they could be improved. They also carefully explained things I had not considered, one by one: that if revision surgery were done incorrectly, my face could end up looking older than it does now; that because my airway was considerably narrow, it could in some cases become severe enough to cause breathing problems; and that the left-right difference in the central axis of my face was putting stress on my temporomandibular joint. I was also very worried that revision surgery might cause nerve damage, since I had already experienced some nerve damage during my first contouring surgery. However, the doctor showed me papers he had presented overseas and explained the process of researching how to operate safely on patients like me who worry about revision surgery or nerve damage, which reassured me greatly. I worry a lot and had many questions, so the initial consultation alone lasted about two hours, and I went back for three additional consultations. Each time, the doctor explained everything extremely carefully without showing the slightest annoyance. So I thought, “If this really is the last surgery of my life, I want to entrust it to this doctor,” and ultimately decided to have surgery at CBK. After surgery, it was much less difficult than I had expected. I could speak better than expected, so I returned to work quickly. What surprised me most was that I had far less swelling than after the double-jaw surgery or the initial three-part contouring surgery. I also immediately felt that breathing was easier from right after surgery, perhaps because my airway had widened. It has now been about two years since surgery, and I am definitely satisfied with the external result. My friends say I look younger and cuter, and my mother now smiles and says my childhood face has come back. I have also introduced the clinic to several friends so far. I have no numbness now and can eat without any problems. As someone who underwent revision surgery, the fact that I am still living my daily life without any problems even two years later is truly reassuring. Only after undergoing several surgeries did I finally come to think, “I really made the right choice entrusting myself to Dr. Choi Bong-gyun.” I even feel that I wish I had learned about CBK a little earlier. I am sincerely grateful to the doctor.
