A story about getting a fat grafting consultation at a university hospital in 1993…

Back then, there wasn’t a community like this, so the vibe was just, if someone said they had it done somewhere, you’d go there and get it done. I was getting a consultation to set a date for eye surgery, and the doctor, who was over 60, kept saying my cheekbones protruded and made my impression look fierce, so he recommended grafting fat from my buttocks into my forehead. Since this was 1993 and I was hearing about taking fat from the buttocks and putting it into the face, it was really the first time I’d ever heard of that kind of surgery. I kind of got swept up and said I’d do it, then came out, but while waiting outside I thought about it and felt like if I put fat in my face and exercised a bit, it would probably go away, and if it got too big it might look ugly. So while the doctor was seeing another patient, I went back in and said, “Doctor, I don’t think I’ll do it. I feel like my face will get too big.” Then the doctor stared at me for a long time as if he was dumbfounded and said, “Hey, do you think I’m going to put your entire butt into your forehead?” It was so funny, but I still said I wouldn’t do it and left. Thinking about it now, I feel like it may have been an early time when there probably wasn’t much clinical data yet. Thankfully, thankfully.
