Do I absolutely have to use autologous costal cartilage for revision surgery?

I do feel like I’ve mostly seen revision surgery done with autologous costal cartilage. But they do use donated costal cartilage too, don’t they?

What risks are there with autologous costal cartilage? Isn’t autologous costal cartilage usually the best final option?

[@josjimun] Since it’s your own tissue, it’s the safest. It’s the strongest, so it can be raised high. The downside is the scar. Donated costal cartilage is taken from a cadaver, so you don’t know if it was from an older person or whose it was, so it can be hit-or-miss, and of course it’s not as good as your own. Also, it gets absorbed more than autologous costal cartilage

I think they use donated costal cartilage again after considering the risk of donated cartilage being absorbed and inflammation occurring. A lot of people seem to do autologous costal cartilage thinking of it as their final surgery

If you’ve already reached revision surgery, I think it’s better to do it more safely.. During my first surgery I used donated costal cartilage, and a problem came up, so when I had revision surgery at ㅈ Clinic, I used autologous costal cartilage. They recommended autologous costal cartilage because of the absorption rate. I didn’t even want to dream of a second revision, so I did it that way, and I also got a custom implant, but I don’t have any discomfort

Are you trying not to use autologous costal cartilage because of pain at the harvest site? Or the cost?? When I had revision surgery, I had no choice but to use autologous costal cartilage, and after surgery at ㄹㅂㄹ they gave me an abdominal binder. Wearing that while going around made it much better because I couldn’t make big movements.. Donated costal cartilage feels kind of iffy,,

[@moonjelly] Right. These days it does seem like there are quite a lot of cases going from donated costal cartilage to donated costal cartilage, but I’m still torn

[@josjimun] They do say that, but apparently autologous costal cartilage also sometimes can’t be used if the chest is small or the bones are a bit weak. So some people’s plan changes from autologous costal cartilage to donated costal cartilage.. If that happens, you just end up with a scar and the loss is bigger, so when I hear things like this too, I get uneasy lol
