TMJ + square jaw + deep bite, eventually two-jaw surgery + contouring at Iyu Oral and Maxillofacial…

Hello:) I had clicking sounds and ongoing pain in my temporomandibular joint since I was young, so it was quite uncomfortable. Especially maybe because of my overbite (deep bite), I had a habit of clenching my teeth even in daily life, and I often felt like my teeth were grinding. On top of that, my face shape was somewhat square-jawed... so I eventually decided to have two-jaw surgery and facial contouring surgery together~ Of course, I had a lot of worries at first too. Surgery isn’t an easy decision. But after hearing that the symptoms I was finding uncomfortable could be improved with two-jaw surgery, I started seriously looking into hospitals. Since two-jaw surgery is a highly difficult procedure, I thought a place that specializes in it, like an oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic, would be better than a plastic surgery clinic. After referring to many reviews and YouTube videos, I chose Iyu Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I had my consultation with Director Shin Hee-jin, and she explained everything carefully and gave me a really trustworthy feeling, so right after the consultation I decided to have surgery! I’ll briefly summarize the recovery period after surgery:) -Days 1~3 The right side of my jaw and cheek throbbed, but it was better than I expected. But the throat pain and nasal congestion were a bit hard, and because I kept breathing through my mouth, my throat and mouth were so dry that it was even more uncomfortable -Days 4~5 The jaw pain decreased a little, but I still had to breathe through my mouth, so my throat kept hurting, and sleeping while sitting up was the hardest. I remember just waiting for the day I could sleep lying down... -Days 6~7 Swallowing became a bit easier, and I started to feel the swelling go down slightly. The right side had been especially swollen, but I could definitely feel it gradually improving, and I finally succeeded in sleeping lying down! I was really moved that day haha -1 month After stitch removal, the wounds inside my mouth healed quickly, and I got a little more used to mouth-opening exercises. Around week 4, it really felt like I could breathe again lol -2 months Even though it throbbed occasionally, it was much more comfortable than before, and eating soft foods became easy. The swelling was also slowly going down^^ -3 months I could eat eggs or minced meat pretty much without problems, and mouth-opening exercises also became much easier. Speaking wasn’t uncomfortable like before either~ -4 months I became able to eat regular meals without much burden, and when people around me said my face shape had become prettier and my impression had softened a lot, I felt quietly proud haha -5 months After eating things like meat, it used to feel a bit stiff, but from this point on, that stiffness was almost gone too! What was best of all was that the headaches and TMJ pain I had experienced almost as part of everyday life before surgery disappeared. It was honestly almost amazing haha -6~7 months Aside from wearing braces, there was almost nothing uncomfortable, and I could do light exercise without any problems. A proper return to daily life! -8 months Before, it was hard to bite off bread with my front teeth, but now, as long as it isn’t too thick, I can bite into it naturally. And maybe because of the change in my face shape, I started hearing compliments quite often too haha -9 months Since it’s the final stage, there haven’t been big changes, but the severe headaches I had before surgery and the pain when clenching my teeth are almost gone, and I’ve gotten very used to my braces, so now I’m living quite comfortably~ Wrapping up:) I hope this post helps even a little for people who, like me, have been worried about problems such as TMJ pain, deep bite, and square jaw. Through surgery, not only my appearance but also functional aspects definitely improved, and most importantly, the change in my face shape gave me confidence~ Thank you to Director Shin Hee-jin at Iyu Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for helping with these improvements haha
