I am a healthy 29-year-old unmarried Korean man. Since middle school, these were the things I heard every day from teachers and upperclassmen at school: "Hey, you punk, stop making that face." "You really have a nasty expression." "This punk is glaring at the teacher. Get down." Because of those misunderstandings and teasing, I spent middle school and high school as a delinquent teenager full of defiance. At a time when I desperately needed comfort and attention, even the girlfriend I trusted broke up with me countless times, saying my face was ugly and my eyes were small. Maybe because I felt there was no one I could lean on, I became even more delinquent, but after seeing tears in my mother’s eyes as she looked at me, I came to my senses, ended that delinquent lifestyle, worked hard, and got into college. But even in college, I couldn’t even go on blind group dates. Until recently before surgery, these were the things I heard from people around me: "Stop frowning." "Your eyes are scary." "Why are your eyes so small?" Other people smile happily when they hear they look like a celebrity, but recently I heard so many times that I looked like Chun Myung-hoon that I couldn’t laugh and cried inside. People say that if someone looks old early, as time passes they will look their age, or younger than their age, but I just sighed because I felt I would only look my age once I was around my 40s. I truly no longer had the courage to live while enduring this complex, so I decided to have surgery. The director also said the surgery went well. The swelling has not completely gone down yet, so I’m not used to it, but my eyes really did get bigger.
