The surgery I had about a year ago was the first surgery of my life. I originally thought my monolids were okay in their own way, and I had never even tried common double-eyelid tape or glue, so I thought double eyelids just did not suit me. But my eyelashes kept poking my eyes, so I went to an ophthalmologist, and they told me it would get better if I had surgery. So that very winter break when surgery came up, I started looking into clinics. I looked into exactly one clinic. At first, I thought about going to a big clinic that comes up right away if you search plastic surgery clinic on Naver Maps, but even I, knowing nothing, felt like I should avoid factory-style clinics. But my older sister’s friend had gotten double eyelid surgery somewhere, and my mom said we should go there, so I said okay and just got dragged along. Back then, it was not for cosmetic purposes but to get rid of discomfort, so I went without doing even a bit of clinic-hopping. At first, I was only going to do ptosis correction to make my eyes a little bigger. But they said ptosis correction would be meaningless and that if I did not do double eyelids, the lashes would keep poking me; I had also kept hearing my older sister say her ptosis correction was a waste of money, so I just decided to get double eyelids. At first, they showed me photos and also marked out the line, and it seriously looked way too thick. Actually, it was not even that thick, but for me, who had lived my whole life with monolids, it was too radical of an expansion. When I said it was too thick and that I wanted it natural, like inner double eyelids, they immediately changed direction. I did not know this, but they said I also had a bit of an epicanthal fold, so I decided to do a slight medial epicanthoplasty too. Originally, I should have booked the surgery before break started, but knowing nothing, I only went after break had started. I thought I would be able to do it right away, but they said all the appointments were full.. So I was like, ah, I’m screwed, I’m going to start school with sausage eyes, but they kept checking the calendar, and a surgery scheduled 3 days later had been canceled, so they said I could do it right away in 3 days!! Honestly, I do not know if it was a sales tactic or not, but for me it was such a win. Since I really emphasized “natural” at first, during the final consultation on the day of surgery, the doctor, no exaggeration, was like, yes.. naturally~ like this, naturally~ yes, I’ll make it natural~ naturally~ like that. Even when I was lying on the operating table and going under sedation: naturally~ Even when I opened my eyes midway: naturally~ It felt like they were brainwashing themself alone. After the surgery ended and I came home and looked in the mirror, it was way less swollen than I expected. I was happy, like wow, legendary success!! But that initial swelling stayed exactly the same for 3 weeks. By the time I went to school, the major swelling had all gone down and it looked reasonably okay. At that time, I was the only person at my school whose double eyelid surgery had turned out successful.. Everyone else had their lines set really high, so it looked way too obvious. I did not know, but I guess my space between the eyes was on the wider side. After doing a very subtle medial epicanthoplasty, the balance also became okay. After 3 or 4 months passed, the line really became thin like inner double eyelids. When I looked upward, it got to the point where it looked like monolids. Kids from high school had no idea I had double eyelid surgery unless I told them. And I actually have a lot of fat on my upper eyelids, so if I had made the line higher, it probably would have looked protruding.. I think it would be good to check things like this. If I had gotten greedy and set the line high for my first surgery, I think it really would have been ruined. I think I succeeded because I am a timid scaredy-cat. Seriously, for your first surgery, absolutely!! Do not get greedy, and keep it moderate. If it feels lacking, you can add little by little, but it is hard to reverse it.. especially things like canthoplasty. Now I do regret a bit, thinking the line is too low and I should have made it just a little higher, but still, I think it is not bad. I hope you all succeed from your very first surgery too!!
