I had plastic surgery at the end of December last year, in 2012. I had nose surgery, full-face fat grafting, and lower canthoplasty, and I was satisfied. But fat grafting has a second round, right? I ended up having the second procedure 1 month later, and on the day of surgery, in the operating room, I said that only one side where I had the lower canthoplasty kept feeling like there was something in my eye, and that it felt tight and painful. Even before the second fat-grafting surgery, when I visited the hospital for a follow-up and told them about the discomfort in one eye where I had the lower canthoplasty, they said they had done the lower canthoplasty with dissolvable sutures but that sometimes they do not dissolve. They put a water-based anesthetic solution into my eye, gave me an injection, and also trimmed the stitches a bit shorter, but I still had discomfort and pain. So on the day of the second fat-grafting surgery, I told them, and they said okay, then went into surgery. But after the surgery ended, one eye somehow felt strange, so I asked the nurse at the clinic whether they had done something to my eye too. She said they had not. I was not fully awake from anesthesia and was a bit groggy, so I went home. The next day I looked in the mirror, and the feeling was the same as when I first had lower canthoplasty. So when I went to the hospital for a follow-up two days later? three days later? I asked. I asked the nurse holding the chart, “You did lower canthoplasty on this eye, right?” and she said they had not. Since she was saying it while looking at the chart, I thought maybe they really had not done it, maybe it was just my feeling, and let it pass. Then when I went for another follow-up, a different nurse looked at the chart and said first, “You had lower canthoplasty redone on only one side?” So I was completely dumbfounded. The doctor had only said okay before going into surgery, and the nurse looking at the chart had said they had not done it, but another nurse looked at the chart and told me they had. I also started suspecting whether something had gone wrong and the hospital had quietly redone it while keeping it under wraps, and I kept feeling dissatisfaction and distrust toward the hospital over what had gone wrong, but I thought it would be okay if the result turned out well. So I did not say anything, but even after 1 month passed since the revision lower canthoplasty on one side, the white of my eye is red, swollen, and keeps feeling tight; discharge comes from my eye (the hospital says this is not discharge but dissolvable sutures coming out. Is that right? To me it feels like discharge, like eye mucus), and when I move my eye to the other side, objects look strange. My eye also actually looks strange externally, so I went back to the hospital because I wondered how long this would last. I asked why my eye keeps being so red,,,, and said that when I look anywhere other than straight ahead, my vision is not clear, and it still hurts like something is in my eye. They only kept talking about the sutures, saying they are dissolvable sutures but sometimes they do not dissolve well, and said they would trim the sutures a bit shorter and give me an injection. They put in anesthetic solution again and gave me an injection in the eye. Then they only said I just need to wait... I really feel like I’m going to lose my temper. I’m worried, and the fact that they proceeded with revision surgery without telling me has created even more of a problem, but I’m also angry at the hospital for acting like it’s nothing and only giving the same answer. Since it’s my eye, I’m also very worried. What is even more absurd and infuriating is this: without patient consent, just because the patient said the lower canthoplasty area was a bit uncomfortable and painful, are they allowed to go into revision surgery without saying anything while operating on another area???? Please tell me how I should handle this. Also, when I first had lower canthoplasty, my eyes got bigger and I liked it, but after they revised only one side, the shapes of both eyes are uneven. It is not so obvious that you can tell at a glance, and I know everyone’s two sides are not perfectly identical. But in photos, the asymmetry is clearly noticeable, and the eye from the first lower canthoplasty and the eye after revision surgery are different. Also, in the other eye that was not revised, when they stitched the lower canthoplasty, maybe it was pulled too tightly, because my eyelashes now point toward the eyeball... so my eyelashes keep poking my eyeball. The doctor says to wait for this too,,,, what am I supposed to do? The hospital keeps saying it feels that way because there is swelling, but how long am I supposed to trust and just keep waiting for a hospital that answers like that? So I went to another ophthalmology clinic, and they spoke seriously. They said that if the underlying cause of the redness in the eye is not removed, it will stay red, and that the lower canthoplasty wound is severe. The canthoplasty area and the eyeball are adhered, so when I move my gaze, there is a phenomenon where things look strange, and this needs to be released again,,, but right now the adhesion is severe, so surgery is difficult, and even if they check again at least one month later and do surgery, they will have to see the situation then. And they said that if another revision is done, it will not be for cosmetic purposes but rather to release the part attached to the eyeball, so I should give up on the cosmetic goal. Then why did I even get lower canthoplasty??? I spent all that money, and now it looks like I’ll have to have surgery several times,.,,, And please also tell me how I should address the fact that they performed revision surgery without patient consent.
