I had nose surgery at a plastic surgery clinic using ear cartilage. But the area where the cartilage was harvested developed a noticeable scar, and my ear became significantly deformed. And after more than 6 months had passed, when most of the swelling had gone down, the shape improved a little, but the deviated nose and other issues I had requested before surgery did not improve at all. I was so depressed because of the deformity and scar on my ear that my daily life and dreams were ruined. Because of this, I went to every ear-related hospital and even had additional surgery, but it could not be reversed. My nose was the same; the issues mentioned above were not improved, so I had revision surgery at another hospital. But I did not ask for anything else and requested a refund from the hospital. The hospital said we should ask an expert to assess it, and in the end, I did not receive any refund or compensation at all. The hospital’s position is that, based on the expert’s objective judgment, they cannot do anything for me. (I am very curious about the director’s personal opinion, but the hospital kept saying we should leave the decision only to the expert.) Later, after the swelling went down, I asked because it seemed like the deviated nose had not improved at all. They said this was a congenital asymmetry issue and could not be corrected, and that it seemed to be because the previous osteotomy had been done strangely. Then I wonder why they made it sound possible at first. I did not pay nearly 10 million won for an expensive surgery just to hear things like this, did I? And although I had several consultations at this hospital before surgery, I do not think I received a detailed explanation about scarring and deformity. I have many grounds for saying this, but to put it briefly: if they had explained that this degree of deformity and scarring could occur and shown examples, would any perfectly fine person have gone ahead with the surgery knowing that? The director said that an acquaintance of his had also been operated on by him and had more severe ear deformity than I did, but did not say anything, and that my degree of deformity was average or on the milder side. So it made me feel as if I were the strange one. It is my face, and isn’t it only natural for a person to become sensitive after having surgery? What does it have to do with me that his acquaintance had worse deformity and did not say anything, and how would I know whether that is true or not? And is he saying this as if it is supposed to comfort me? Above all, if the consent form says that asymmetry is difficult to correct and deformity may occur, does that mean they do not have to provide any compensation or take any responsibility for the surgical result? Honestly, I do not think even 100 million won would make me feel better, and if I could fix it even by spending 100 million won, I would want to fix it again. Everyone, I hope you carefully check not only the preoperative consent form, but also the possible scenarios and how they will take responsibility, so that nothing like what happened to me happens to you. Decide carefully. No one will take responsibility for you, and your life is at stake.
