It has already been almost 3 years since I had orthodontic treatment and mandibular surgery because of acquired asymmetry. To just give the conclusion, this is absolutely not a surgery to get simply for cosmetic reasons because you think, “I wish my jaw were slimmer.” For a month after surgery, you swell so much that looking in the mirror can make you depressed. It swells so frighteningly that you wonder, “Can it really swell this much?” You look like a toad monster. For one or two months, you can’t open your mouth wide, and brushing your teeth is only at the level of using mouthwash. All you can do is wait for the swelling to go down quickly. On top of that, even now, 3 years after surgery, my jaw makes clicking sounds every time I open my mouth. It does open wide well. I can chew tough foods well too. But once fatigue starts building up in my jaw, there is pain along with clicking sounds, like the bones are hitting each other. It is subtly stressful. Of course, I also have chronic fatigue in the temporomandibular joint. I was under severe stress because of asymmetry, and after being told it couldn’t be fixed with orthodontics, I did get the surgery. But if you have any other option, please avoid surgery as much as possible.. Even orthodontics alone damages your teeth and gums, so how much harm would a surgery that peels back the jaw skin and cuts the bone do to the body? Right now I’m living without any particular problems, but I’m afraid every day that side effects may appear as I get older. Please do not get jawbone surgery for cosmetic purposes.
