Before before before / after after after Since elementary school, it was hard to chew with my left teeth, so I only chewed on the right side. Whenever I went to the dentist, I was always told that I needed orthodontic treatment, and when I went to an orthodontic clinic, they said I would probably need double-jaw surgery once I became an adult. As my jaw gradually grew, I had a lot of concerns about a protruding jaw and asymmetry. I was teased a lot, and even people meeting me for the first time often talked about my jaw, so it was stressful.
While looking into hospitals, I learned about Y Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery through a recommendation from a fellow soldier, and I booked and visited the hospital during military leave. At the first consultation, the director’s explanation and reassuring words made me choose the hospital without looking into any others. After deciding to have double-jaw surgery and two types of facial contouring (square jaw + chin), I was told that pre-surgical orthodontic treatment followed by surgery would be best, so I went for orthodontic treatment every time I had leave.
Day of surgery I had to be at the hospital by 9:40, so I woke up early, washed up, and went. On the way, I was shaking and nervous, so I watched Lee Seok-jae’s double-jaw surgery life YouTube videos. After arriving at the hospital, I listened to the explanations, changed clothes, and entered the operating room. After inhaling the anesthetic gas, I had no memory, and I woke up after 3 o’clock. It was a day when breathing was very difficult. Because I was struggling so much to breathe, the nurse cut the rubber bands for me and also removed the urinary catheter, so I walked around inside the hospital and tried to breathe by swallowing phlegm. I was relieved that the nurses helped me a lot.
Day 2 It was also really hard to breathe that day. There was a huge amount of phlegm stuck in my throat, saliva was flowing from my mouth, and all I remember is how difficult it was because of all the phlegm in my throat. They gave me New Care and water too, but my throat was very swollen, and maybe because of the phlegm, I could barely drink. Breathing and drinking were harder than the pain ㅠㅠ I walked around inside the hospital often and tried to swallow the phlegm.
Day 3 It was the day of discharge, so I listened to the precautions after discharge and left the hospital. From this point, my nose was completely open, so it was at least bearable. I also drank New Care little by little. I put powdered medicine into a medicine bottle and tried hard to swallow it in one gulp. Still, after taking the medicine, breathing was easier.
Day 4 I went outside to take a walk. They said I also needed to manage the swelling well, so I tried to go out once a day. I also kept doing cold/warm compresses whenever I had time.
Days 5-7 Staying at home all the time felt so frustrating, so when I went out for a walk, I also went to a PC cafe for an hour. From this point, I bought misutgaru at a cafe and drank about two cups a day. If I was hungry, I also drank New Care.
Day 8 It was the day I went to the hospital. The swelling had gone down a lot compared with the beginning. I think walking really helps reduce swelling. At the hospital, they did a simple disinfection and I used a swelling-reduction device for 30 minutes before leaving.
Day 9 to week 2 I walked around a lot and went to the PC cafe often. I felt that sitting and playing games helped with reducing swelling more than lying down.
Day of stitch removal My physical condition was not that good that day. There were many reviews saying stitch removal hurt a lot, so I went to the hospital scared and nervous. While the stitches were being removed, I broke out in a cold sweat and started hyperventilating, so it was difficult. Looking back, it wasn’t actually that painful, but I think it happened because I was nervous and not in good condition. Stitch removal is not extremely painful, so I hope you go without being too nervous. I also practiced changing the rubber bands, and since it was my first time, it was very hard. Even when I did it at home, it took over an hour ㅠㅠ Still, once you get the hang of it, you can do it quickly. Since I could now eat mostly soft foods like steamed eggs or soft tofu, I felt like I was living like a person again.
People around me have reacted well after the surgery. They told me that even though there is still swelling, it looks like the surgery went well and that it was good that I had it done. In my eyes too, my face has become much smaller, and the asymmetry has improved a lot. It is still hard because there are not many things I can eat yet, but I really think the surgery was a good decision!!
