Ever since I was young, at the dental clinic where I went hand in hand with my parents for orthodontic treatment, I was told that this wasn’t a case for braces and that I should get double jaw surgery when I grew up. Usually orthodontic treatment is for malocclusion of the teeth, but for me, the problem started with the skeletal structure. At first, I thought, why would I need double jaw surgery... and strongly opposed it, saying I absolutely didn’t want to and couldn’t do it, but after the dentist’s persistent persuasion, I ended up having it done. For me, function was the priority, so I had it done at a university hospital, and 1 year later I also had the plates removed. When I looked up double jaw surgery, I was most worried about side effects too. My side effect is that the area under my nose, near the right side of the philtrum and lip, has partially very dulled sensation. It feels like that heavy numb feeling after anesthesia when having a tooth extracted..? For me, this side effect appeared after plate removal rather than after double jaw surgery, and it did seem like the nerve was injured during the process of cutting into the area twice. I don’t think plate removal can necessarily be seen as directly leading to relief of side effects.
