My son, who was a high school senior two years ago, had so much difficulty breathing through his nose that he could not even study with his head lowered. After hearing at an ENT clinic that surgery for a “deviated septum” could improve it, we found a plastic surgery clinic overflowing with positive reviews saying that rhinitis surgery and cosmetic surgery could be done together. On April 24, 2023, the first surgery involved the ENT department cutting and straightening the nasal septum, which was the cause of his rhinitis, then the plastic surgery department slightly shaving down his hump nose, inserting silicone to raise the height of the nose, and slightly reducing the nostrils. However, after surgery, my son’s bleeding did not stop, and blood kept pooling inside his nose. For 3 weeks, he wore a splint and had blood drained, and due to excessive resection of the nasal septum (opinion from another hospital), contracture came just 3 weeks after surgery, making his nose look upturned. We were not told that manipulating the septal cartilage could cause side effects such as inflammation, contracture, or failure to stop bleeding. When we told the doctor in charge that the shape of his nose looked strange, he said it might return if we waited, so we waited 6 months, but there was no change. During those 6 months, my son, who had always taken pride in his appearance, became someone with a pig-like nose and would not come out of bed, like a recluse. The hospital then said that his nose shape could be remade with a second surgery.
And again, on October 18, 2023, we paid an additional 1 million won for the second surgery. Even by the time of the second surgery, we had not been told the exact cause of the first surgery’s outcome, and the hospital only said that neither the cause of the bleeding failure nor the cause of the contracture was due to a surgical mistake. Without knowing what the cause was, my son was only told that it was a rare case, and underwent the second surgery with silicone and harvested autologous costal cartilage. After the second surgery, an unsightly scar remained below his ribs, and his nose looked artificially too pointed, but they said this too would take about 6 months to become rounded again.... After 6 months, my son’s nasal septum and columella had collapsed, and he even developed nasal cavity stenosis that made it difficult to breathe through his nose.
Last November, he had a third surgery at another hospital. When they opened his nose, they confirmed that the nasal septum had been excessively resected during the first surgery, and they removed all implants inside the nose. He now has an upturned nose again and has to endure a year until a fourth reconstructive surgery.
The doctor who hid this medical malpractice until the end, did not even apologize, let alone provide fair compensation, and ruined the life of an 18-year-old male student so that he could not even go on to university, used to work at a large plastic surgery clinic near Yeoksam Station and has now opened his own clinic near Sinnonhyeon. When we asked the surgical hospital for compensation, they offered an amount that would not even cover revision surgery. We reported it to the Consumer Protection Agency and were recommended a settlement of 16 million won, but the hospital said it could only pay 10 million won. For reference, the third and fourth revision surgeries cost roughly 17 million won. @@;;
With vacation season here, it is the season when many students are tempted by reviews or events and undergo cosmetic surgery. My son also had surgery after seeing a hospital with many reviews, and now he is experiencing this living hell. Everyone, you must not be tempted into surgery by overflowing good reviews or events like “rhinitis and cosmetic surgery all at once~” or “cheap rhinitis treatment and rhinoplasty through indemnity insurance~.” Septoplasty is a surgery that requires advanced skill. An unskilled plastic surgery scalpel can ruin your life. You must carefully check the doctor’s experience and choose your hospital well.!! We are now preparing a one-person protest in front of the clinic opened by that doctor. ㅠㅠ
