First of all, as the title says, I had surgery because of my long face + receding chin + asymmetry. I do have cheekbones too, but I only had surgery on my chin/jaw, which was my complex.
I did a ton of online and in-person research, and I think I spent almost a month just going to consultations haha
My midface is also on the longer side, but my chin was long and receded, so it made my face look even longer? For example, it had a vibe like comedians Kim Young-chul or Kim Young-hee?? That kind of face haha. So during consultations, some clinics recommended double jaw surgery, and some clinics said the effect wouldn’t be that big..
And I knew that asymmetry cannot be improved 100% with chin/jaw surgery alone, so I lowered my expectations to just improving it compared to before...
Anyway, after going to consultations at several places, I came to the conclusion that the doctor’s style and the face shape I wanted had to match. Since my facial features aren’t flashy anyway, I didn’t want an idol-like doll line, and I wanted a face that naturally looked less long and an improvement in my receding chin.
During the consultation, I edited my photo in Photoshop and asked if it could turn out like this, and that helped me find the clinic that was exactly right for me~
They said that rather than reducing the vertical length, the three-dimensionality and shape of the face were important, and that improving the receding chin would definitely reduce the impression of looking long~ With a T-osteotomy, they reduced the length and width and slightly rotated it to improve the asymmetry, and I had square jaw surgery not so much because my square jaw was developed, but for the facial line and soft-tissue management~
That’s how I chose the clinic, and after a few ups and downs like changing the date due to personal circumstances, I finally had the surgery. I still have some residual swelling now, but I’m so, so satisfied.
Before, I had a long face, but now it has actually become more of a round face haha
In my post-op CT, it looked a bit uneven, so I was shocked and asked if something had gone wrong. They told me that areas where the bone has become thinner can show up as if there is no bone~
I think about 40% of the sensation in my front chin has come back~ I knew from reviews that jaw surgery can cause tightness in the lower jaw, but I didn’t know that in the early period after square jaw surgery, it can be hard to open your mouth, so I was really flustered at first~ Now I can open it almost all the way, but not enough to comfortably eat a hamburger ㅠ And along with gum tightness, I also have pain in my lower front teeth when chewing~ So I have to be careful with hard or tough foods and eat slowly ..ㅎ They say these are things you go through during the recovery process, but because I didn’t know at first, I was really scared and worried..ㅎㅎ I guess everyone’s progress can show up a little differently~
I knew there could be pain after surgery, but how painful it is and what kind of symptoms appear seem to differ from person to person.. I don’t tolerate pain well, and I’m sensitive and worry a lot, so I kept asking whether the surgery had really gone well haha. But each time, I was able to meet the doctor, and it was nice that he reassured me. A doctor’s words have a really, really big impact on a patient, right? haha
I hope those of you considering surgery meet a good doctor! And if you’re worried and anxious about whether things are okay after surgery, make sure to contact your clinic, and I hope you recover well!
