I had incisional double eyelid surgery during winter break when I was going from my first year to my second year of high school. Even though after the surgery I heard a lot of things like that I was pretty or that I looked like a certain celebrity, I think the biggest reasons I regret it are that I miss my old face, my lines are uneven, and my impression became too strong.
And even if you do get double eyelid surgery, I really recommend waiting until after you become an adult. The time when I had double eyelid surgery was when my face was changing a lot. Even up until early in my first year of high school, I had really severe ptosis, so my eyes looked like buttonholes. So I waited only for winter break, thinking that I absolutely had to get double eyelid surgery. And as soon as winter break started, I had the surgery.
At that time, I got double eyelid surgery recklessly without properly analyzing or observing my face. The first reason was that my eyesight was very bad, and I didn't wear contact lenses then, so I didn't even really know what my face looked like without glasses. When I saw myself in photos, I felt ugly and unnatural. So I think I believed that if I got double eyelid surgery, everything would get better.
I also thought monolids were always unattractive. I barely knew that eye shape or size could change depending on the eye muscles. So I didn't really try other efforts besides surgery and just got double eyelid surgery. I followed eye-enlarging exercises on YouTube a few times and then thought, “As expected, things like this don't work,” and gave up.
The reason I was able to become prettier after double eyelid surgery was not only because I got double eyelids. Once I had double eyelids, I tried wearing contact lenses and worked harder on makeup that I normally didn't do. Since I also got orthodontic treatment, my lower face improved too, so when I compared myself to old photos, I felt that not only my eyes but my whole face had become prettier overall. Also, when I looked at photos from right before surgery, I saw that my face had changed a lot again as it grew, and that I had become prettier then too. The nasal bridge I didn't have in middle school suddenly appeared in high school, so my features became a bit more defined, but I hadn't noticed that before getting double eyelid surgery.
These days, double eyelid surgery has become so common that people even say it barely counts as plastic surgery, and it seems like many people easily get double eyelid surgery at a young age. But I think that when you have monolids, you often focus so much on your eye complex that you don't pay attention to any other part of your face, or your pretty eyes are just hidden because your eye-opening strength is weak, yet instead of fixing everyday habits, people often go straight to surgery no matter what.
So before getting double eyelid surgery, the things I recommend trying first are: 1. Build your eye-opening strength. Don't just open your eyes wide a few times and give up; it's important to keep doing it consciously until they get bigger. For those who wear glasses, you may have developed a habit of lifting with your eyebrows because of the glasses, so if possible, I recommend wearing clear contact lenses or changing to lighter frames. Even now after double eyelid surgery, when I try wearing my old glasses, they're so heavy that I automatically put strength into my eyebrows… 2. If you have bad eyesight, please try contact lenses instead of glasses. As long as you manage them well, your eye health isn't likely to worsen significantly, and I think it's a much better choice than getting double eyelid surgery. Once you take off your glasses, it will be much easier to build eye-opening strength, and your eyes may actually be fairly big even though you didn't know because they were hidden behind your lenses. 3. Diet Seriously, the best plastic surgery is dieting… Try losing weight first. Your face changes a lot, seriously. 4. Orthodontic treatment If your teeth are crooked, I recommend using the money for double eyelid surgery to finish orthodontic treatment first. After orthodontics, if your jawline becomes slimmer and your mouth shape becomes prettier, your face changes quite a lot in subtle ways. Seriously, even orthodontics alone can make your face prettier to some extent.
This became much longer than I expected, so I don't know if anyone has read this far… That's how much I really want to stop people who are trying to get double eyelid surgery at a young age. You really must not think that your growth has stopped even by high school.
Also, I had the mindset that non-incisional double eyelid surgery has a high chance of coming undone, so I absolutely had to do incision, but like me, you may regret it again after a few years. So even if you do get double eyelid surgery, I hope you choose non-incisional if possible. It's relatively easy to find cases of reversing non-incisional double eyelid surgery, but it is really, really hard to find cases of reversing incisional double eyelid surgery, and they say you can't completely go back to your old eyes. I really regret doing incisional surgery
I hope young people who see this post won't recklessly get double eyelid surgery and regret it like I did… You really need to be careful when deciding on double eyelid surgery, and please make sure to visit many clinics too. I just went straight to the clinic that an acquaintance had used, but I think it's really necessary to visit several places and compare them.
Thank you for reading. I hope this was helpful.
