I had extraction orthodontic treatment when I was twenty, and had 2 teeth removed from the top and 2 from the bottom
First, the advantages are
- My teeth became straight: When the shape of my teeth was a mess, I could not even bite noodles off properly, but after braces, I can bite them off well
- I can live with my mouth closed: Before orthodontic treatment, I had to make an effort to close my mouth, so it was always open. Because of that, I also had various problems that came from naturally breathing through my mouth. I think if I had not had orthodontic treatment back then, my facial shape might have changed even more
And the disadvantages
- Fixed retainer: When orthodontic treatment is finished, a thin wire called a fixed retainer is always attached to the inner side of the upper teeth and the inner side of the lower teeth. You do get used to it, but if food gets stuck in the gap between the retainer and the teeth, it is quite hard to remove. Since a wire is firmly blocking the middle of the front teeth horizontally, you cannot use dental floss, so you have to insert an interdental brush into the gap to get it out
And one part I still do not know whether it is an advantage or a disadvantage (personally, I am satisfied)
- Correction of protruding mouth: If you have orthodontic treatment, a protruding mouth is corrected to some extent. There are positive and negative effects from this. First, as a positive effect, when viewed from the side, the line of the nose and mouth definitely looks aesthetically better. However, when viewed from the front, because the mouth goes inward, the lips become thinner. Since the lower teeth move behind the upper teeth to align the bite, especially the lower lip becomes thinner more than the upper lip. Because of this, the lower jaw may look longer than before orthodontic treatment (the actual jaw absolutely does not become longer). The impression that looked vacant because the mouth was always open improves, and the mouth line also definitely gets better, but I think you need to consider this part. Also, nasolabial folds do appear, but now, several years later, they have disappeared. It seems there are also cases where nasolabial folds persist, so please keep that in mind
